        did anyone notice that the handguns that they were firing were 1911 style, not german?

            Yes you can own firearms in Germany. There are two levels of gun owners in Germany, shooter/collectors and hunters. Different requirements and different types of hoops to jump through. Shooting fests are popular there (or were when I lived there for 3 years). The big problem is room for ranges. The 100 meter range I shot on had houses hard up around the range and overhead baffles to trap any rounds that didn't go into the backstop. The .22 range had a hiking path that went behind and below the backstop. Just not a lot of room in the suburban areas for shooting. Germany relaxed its gun laws in the 90s to allow some semi auto rifles which had previously been verboten. France and the Netherlands on the other hand are tough places to be a shooter in Europe.
