Ear protection?

I always get caught up in these types of earplugs, but at the end of the day I still prefer good old fashion foam ones.

Howard Leight Super Leights are the best.. I use em both riding and at the range. And over ear muffs, because the "BOOOM" cant be protected with just ear foams.

What you find comfortable really depends individually on the shape of the ear canal.

Foam plugs work well enough if they fit right.

If you want it to fit right every time, then spring for a set of custom plugs. Pay for it once and you never have to worry about it again. This is especially important if foam plugs are hard to make work well for you.

You can go to Walmart and buy multiple foams for 2 bucks with NRR of 31-33.

Have you ever tried them... as for the foam plugs, I hate them they are no way as comfortable as the Surefiers. I have had the same pair of EP4's for almost 2 years. You idea of the foam being cheaper is no all together true. How many trips would you use the same pair of foamies over and over again... not many. You can clean these over and over again and like I said I still have the same pair I got almost 2years ago and they still are good to go... I paid $8.00 for 2 pairs on a promo from Midway.

Foam ear plugs offer the highest NRR rating you can get - 33NRR. Ear muffs only go as high as maybe 31NRR and that's for the Peltor H10A which often times are so large they may get in the way of shooting.

To the OP - A combination of both an earplug AND an earmuff will give you the best hearing protection. Look for an earplug with a rating of 33NRR and an earmuff with a minimum of 20NRR (20 is usually what the electronic earmuffs provide), preferrably 25NRR.

There are some good recommendations on this thread but keep in mind the NRR rating is what's most important. That's what will help with hearing protection. GL with your search.

Do a google search for "Worlds Finest Ear Plugs", pure heaven. I started using these when I was doing CAS shooting... 'cause muffs look plain stupid with cowboy hats. These are soft and form to your ear, so comfortable you can wear them all day without your ears hurting. They are every bit as good as my top-of-the-line Peltor muffs. Give them a try you won't be disappointed.

BTW, I have found that unless you have huge ears you don't need one disc in each ear, split them in half and use a half in each ear, works great.

That's the best protection you can get. You then get the NRR from BOTH...added together.

The person saying plugs are "scatchy" in the ear, have you ever tried the very soft foam Laser type plugs?

I was at the range today, and while wearing a 31 NRR plugs, had my ears ringing from a cannon a few feet away. My 16" barrel .308 sonded like a BB gun next to it, so I'm donna go with muffs over plugs.



Canal caps are intended for short duration frequently put on/off low noise areas.
