gun locks and PPTs

I hope people can clarify this one for me. When doing a PPT it is my understanding that you must leave the gun store with a CA DOJ approved lock that was obtained in the last 30 days. I say "obtained" because I refuse to buy a $10 lock at the gun store every time.

So I go to the PD beforehand and get a free DOJ approved lock. But every time I do a PPT the FFL or gun store says "that's no good". Why not? Am I not following the law or are they just being arbitrary?

One PD gave me a business card that was put in the time stamp machine. One PD had no business cards so they stamped a piece of paper. One stamped the instruction sheet that came with the lock. Once they wrote "gun lock given to {my name}" and signed it (along with the date/time stamp).

So I have a DOJ approved lock with what I thought was appropriate proof that it was less than 30 days old. The receipt says it was obtained in the last 30 days - although I can sort of see why a piece of paper with no reference to the lock may not be good enough.

But why is the FFL saying that this is not good enough - are they just trying to sell me a lock? I already have a drawer full...

Just have to show proof of obtaining via a receipt dated within the last 30 days. If all the PD did was write on a piece of paper that you received the lock from them, with a signature, you should be good.

Well that is sure what I thought. That's why I was irked that the FFLs I deal with say it's no good.

I did a PPT on my M&P 15-22 to a buyer and I supplied the cable lock that came with the rifle when I first bought it more than 30 days ago. Guy at the gun shop that was fine and didn't charge the buyer any additional fees.

Yes - that works. I was talking about the case where the seller does not provide the lock.

If you really need a new lock with receipt, just go to Walmart, Big 5, or some store that has a lenient return policy and buy a lock (keep it sealed up) and take it in with you and show the reciept to the FFL. You probably don't need to show the lock to them, just the reciept. After you pick up your gun, go back to the store and return the unopened lock for a full refund. Simple as that.

Use another FFL; I have never had this issue. I have done several PPT's and just had to fill out a form about my gun safe.

That only works with long guns. Handguns require a separate lock to be present when the FFL releases the gun.

that only works for long gun purchases. Federal law requires a handgun come iwth a lock, and a CA safe affidavit isn't accept to the feds.

This type of scenario seems to be hit and miss for me...I've had some make me buy the lock and some just have me sign the safe affidavit.

What I don't understand is why does it have to be purchased within the past 30 days? Most pistols come with a lock already...why does a person have to buy another lock when it already has one?

give the seller a cable lock and then state it come with the gun? but then again that sounds a bit illegal....

oh wait, sell the seller a cable lock from you then have him bundle it with the gun cause he doesn't need it anymore. and now the gun comes with a cable lock w/ gun?

I think the best thing to do is to show up with the lock in the case that handgun comes with (if there is a case). If the seller doesn't have it, bring one and put it in before you go into the store. Most ffls will just then write 'oem' in the form meaning it comes with the oem lock.

That does nothing for a PPT.

As DaveFJ80 said, buy a lock at Big 5 and use the receipts for all your firearm pick ups for that 30 days then take it back unopened for a refund. The 18 year old girl behind the counter at B5 doesn't care why you are returning it.

I haven't seen a gun lock for sale at Walmart for several months.

OK, I can buy a brand new Glock, which comes with a factory handgun lock, and that is good enough for the law, but if I buy that same Glock, used, from a private party, with that same lock included, it isn't acceptable?
