You need a personal defense plan. Mine is get my gun, call 911, get all members of my family into the bedroom behind cover, and wait for police to arrive while I keep them on the phone. Unless someone takes my wife outside, I'm not going to leave the building with a loaded gun.

Hoologan, if you're serious, you are going to either wind up dead or in jail for escalating the situation. It's one thing to yell out the window at some vandals, but leaving the house with a gun is just asking for trouble, especially in California.

I'm just saying things have changed so much, you can't even defend yourself in a fight (with fists) without the fear of going to jail. It's ridiculous.

Yes back in the day. Now back to reality. Try shooting somebody for vandalism and most likely you are the one ending up in prison.

Third, While in theory calling the cops and letting them handle it sounds good, the fact of the matter is that vandalism isn't exactly a top priority for the police. You'll be lucky if they show up the next morning. And unless you have some solid proof regarding who the vandals are, don't expect an arrest. After all, it's not like a murder, don't expect a major investigation or a countywide manhunt.

I'm wondering if vandals are in the process of defacing and damaging your property, and you have 911 or the cops on the phone asking for help, I bet you'll get their attention and they'll send somebody out ASAP if you say "I have a gun and I feel threatened, somebody might get shot..."

I think you'll get a faster (maybe not better) response from the cops showing up while the vandals are still in the act.

Yes, I don't plan to run out to escalate it to be more than what it is, just paint. It's my plan to have everyone stay inside and call 911 and let them figure it out BUT at the same time, I just don't want it to happen over and over again. First it's just paint, then next physical property damage, then what..I'll weigh my option and whats best for our family. The officers in our area are generally pretty good and we've never had any other problems in the area.

Anyhow, I just needed to get some opinions on this matter.

I agree.

The reason why people commit property crimes is because there are no real consequences.

If it was legal and normal for punks to get beat down with permanent disabilities/disfigurement or shot dead if they stole or vandalized, they would do it less.

Most people think it's kinda harsh to kill some dirtbag who would steal or vandalize property. So we are where we are.

And our society is far from being civilized. In a civilized society, I wouldn't have to lock, alarm, and put security cameras on my property.

We should just make stealing and vandalism non-crimes since the punishment doesn't deter dirtbags from doing it anyway.

I'm not sure if this is the correct spot to ask this question but my parents house just got vandalized last week by someone and they spray painted swastikas all over the place. This was done as they were sleeping. My wife and I stay there 2 nights during the week so they could babysit our daughter during the day. I grew up in this house and we've been there for almost 30years!...this is in the city of Glendora.

Anyhow, my question is, if it happens again and I catch them in the act, if I go running out of the house with my shotgun and they decide to try to attack me, I wouldn't want to shoot them to kill but if I had to would that be the right thing to do to protect myself or is it "allowed" only if it's a home invasion and they have a weapon...

They could be stupid kids but to me it's more person since it feels more like a hate crime and that we're singled out. It's an older neighborhood and we know everyone there so I'm not sure if this is just a random act. I'm kinda in a dilemma on what to do. Besides adding more lighting and cameras now, I'm not sure that would be much of a deterrent.

If I see them in the act, I'd call the cops and take plenty of pictures _from_inside_ the house. Do not go outside w/ shotgun to confront them, stay inside.

Young idiots

It is extremely unlikely you'll catch them in the act. If, however you do, first call 911 and report it and wait awhile. If you're lucky, they'll still be at it when the police arrive, in which case, problem solved.

If it looks like they are about finished and prepared to leave, flick the porch lights on and off, then go outside armed with a camera and powerful flashlight.

People who do this are young kids looking for kicks. They'll scatter like cockroaches and if you're lucky, you'll get a license plate number.

If you're small of stature and/or there are a lot of them, you're within your rights to arm yourself, but I'd suggest doing it very discreetly.

Running outside clutching a shotgun is not a good idea and just may get you shot by a rookie police officer who may just roll up at that time.

Best piece of advice I can give you? Talk to the local PD and ask them what they recommend you do in case it occurs again and you happen to be there. Take their advice, even if it is different than what I or others are giving you.
