    Dang. This ND must've hurt

    Man wounded in gun accident
    Times-Herald staff report
    Posted: 04/16/2010 01:03:27 AM PDT

A Vallejo man on the 100 block of Kathy Ellen Drive was shot in the lower right leg Wednesday night, apparently wounding himself while cleaning his gun, an emergency responder said.

The Vallejo Fire Department was called to the man's home at about 10:35 p.m. and found him with a wound that was not life-threatening but was a "significant traumatic incident," Fire Capt. Eric Strom said.

The .38-caliber revolver handgun apparently discharged during cleaning, Vallejo Police Sgt. Herman Robinson said.

The man was transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

Honestly I can't see how NDs while cleaning revolvers are common. Are they?

If you pull the trigger and it's loaded, I don't see why it would be different than any other firearm. Check, double check, and recheck that your firearm is unloaded before handling it or cleaning it.

If it was a striker fired semi-auto that needs to have trigge pulled in order to disassemble, then the idiot might have a case. But a revolver?

A small amount of people will ever fess up to their ND. My friend, who is very responsible, had an ND. Ironically he is one of the best candidates to own a gun haha

I just can't comprehend an ND like this!! I can maybe understand an ND on the range during a high stress course or similar, but while "cleaning" your firearm in the comfort of your own home!!?? I guess you really can't fix stupid.....or maybe you're cured after you shoot yourself. Maybe it's like bloodletting in the olden days????

At least it didn't happen while he was teaching gun safety to a new shooter, those are the worst I think when I read about them in the news.

Several days later the bolt was rusted shut but I guess the fouling wasnt TOO bad.

In stories like this "I was cleaning it" means "I was playing with it".

How do you get an ND on a revolver?

                    That you were cleaning???

That said, I've had an ND and it scared the bejesus out of me. It wasn't while cleaning though.

Assuming it is a classical revolver - you pull the trigger on a loaded revolver

Assuming it is a derringer revolver - you cock the hammer and pull the trigger, or cock the hammer and dump it in your range/gym bag and throw the bag around.

Sucks, but some lessons are learned the hard way. I am sure he will be real careful next time. Hope he is ok.

                            Step #1 Empty the gun.
                            Step #2 See rule #1.

Maybe he was the only one in the room professional enough to handle the gun.
