I like the Mini 14 and own an NRA model. I guess compared to an AR they do seem pretty tame but it sure shoots great. Looks meaner when I add a 20 round pre-ban magazine and a scope.

LOL! I've heard good things about the NRA model.

              That is a beautiful stock.

Now I have to ask, are the latest, made after 2005, mini's the best?

Nice look I want to do the same to my NRA version. What type of muzzle break is that; where did you purchase it and how is it attached?

The Choate cover works just fine... I actually like it better than the stock piece. The guard doesn't allow me to get a good grip on the rifle. Just mind the reciprocating charging arm and you'll be fine.

The barrel was threaded to accept AR-15 type muzzle brakes and flash hiders. I opted for the Smith AR-15 .223 muzzle brake.

The rifle was treated by the Gundoc who's highly regarded on PerfectUnion.

Everybody says that the 581 series Mini 14's are much better than the older ones. Thicker barrel is the big change on those rifles. If you have some time on your hands check out this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Fk84...eature=channel

That's the NRA version with 16" barrel. Will look more like a M1A if I add this to it.

There are more parts, telescoping stocks, etc for the AR (as long you use the bullet button type of configuration). Or you can use an entry stock if you chose to go featureless.

I have both, and they are in my safe for two different reasons. The mini is a simple reliable plinker, and fun to shoot - but it loses points on accuracy and availability of parts, and affordable good magazines (Ruger only recently released their factory 10 round mags, it wasn't an option when I first purchased my mini).

The AR's are of course more accurate, and the adult's version of Legos.

I agree. My AR is more comfortable to shoot as well & doesn't fling the spent brass into the next county.
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Tis better to have Trolled & lost, Than to never have Trolled, at all.

I was wondering where all that brass comes from?

That's an added bonus of suppressing cover fire of hot brass on your R flank.
