I went to an indoor range with my LR-308 for the first time that has an 18" barrel and JP Cooley Muzzle break. I took a few shots and then realized that I was the only one shooting. When I looked down range, I saw a bunch of people staring at me. I apologized, emptied the magazine, and put the gun away. One of the people later thanked me. He stated that the blast was over the top. I explained that I never fired the gun before. I didn't realize how loud it was until a friend fired it later. It is now an outdoor gun. Even with hearing protection you could still feel it.

Range etiquette - flying shell casings into next lane

THIS!! I had a Mini-14 that would chuck brass like nothing else. At an outdoor range I was standing close to eight feet behind my car and it launched a shell casing back over my car and landed on the hood.Comment

Before the Gun Range opened up here in Sac, I would regularly go shoot at the Cordova Shooting Center, as janky as that place is, it was only pace that was close to me.
Hot brass was constantly pinging me on my head and rolling down the back of shirt causing me to do that hot brass dance, no bueno.
I started to wear a boonie hat whenever I was on the pistol side of the range and that took care of the hot brass dance but I would still get pinged in the head. No biggy, I would just move to the next lane if possible, it's all part of the shooting experience.Comment

I never understood people that complain about loud noises or flying brass at a range. It's a frickin' gun range and people are shooting guns! Deal with it or leave. If someone's semi is chuckin' brass at me, I usually ignore it. Yeah sure, one or two hit your head and bounce off, so what. They don't hurt for the most part. Now if it was a .308 or something big throwing hard, I'll just move over.
I don't really have a problem with people asking me to try to aim/deflect the brass elsewhere, as long as they do it nicely. Nobody wants a jerk telling them what to do.
To have a dammed noOb complain to me about flying brass would make me laugh. "My brass is hitting you? Thanks for letting me know. now leave me alone"Im just a doode, playin' a doode, disguised as another doode

Jeez...another CG gun range butt hurt thread.
All brass chucking issues can be dealt with one way or another. Cheaply too.
Partitions?
2 of these
and a big/wide piece of cardboard.
Yes. Clamp the cardboard to the partition. High enough to deflect the brass back into your stall.
This works for the flipper or the flipee.
Everybody goes home happy. More or less.
The people that flip their brass into low orbit and it lands in another's stall know that this can be a problem. Do something about it. There may be new gunnies (there for the first time) next to you. Please make a good impression. We need every one of them.Comment

The only time I asked someone (politely) to reposition is when a guy was shooting an AR to the left of me, no barrier or brass catcher, was shooting standing, a step back from the bench and his muzzle was level to me. His brass was shooting 1 o'clock and I asked mainly because I had potential to be within the line of fire. He moved forward a foot and all was well in the world.
At Oak Tree, I bring a wide brimmed hat for flying brassComment

Has anyone ever encountered shell casings hitting you Normal.
guys next to me (who appeared like they were first time shooters with their rentals and shooting antics) tapped on my shoulder and pretty much demanded that I stop having my casings fly over. I would of spoke to the RO
Is there really anything that can be done to prevent this from happening when somebody asks you to stop? Talk to RO. They might move them or you or place a better screen in between. Or tell them that happens and normal.
I stand next to the barrier so the casings bounce back and hit me,
ASR had screens that I would use .
If that didn't work I would wait in to his reloading cycle and shoot.
Or 44mag
When at the rifle range
Same thing
screens.
If that didn't work I would wait in to his reloading cycle and shoot.
That does not work....

a clone of this one.
Some Benchrest shooters are *****s considering I was there first
and there are open tables.
A lot like golf guys.. Hey.. Shud up. Your ruining my concentration
And thank you to this guy.

complaining about flying brass or loud noises at a gun range?! Seriously?
That's like going to the beach and being surprised that sand got in your shoe.
If you don't like it, take the drive out to the desert.
Flying brass is just part of the range experience. Just ask my wife's cleavage.Comment

Has anyone ever encountered an issue where either you had somebody to the left of you shooting their gun and shell casings were ejecting pretty high and over the 7 ft barrier and hitting you or falling into your lane where you're setup to shoot? Or the other way around, where you're the one shooting (I'm 6'3") and my pistol ejects casings over the 7 ft barrier hitting people in the next lane over?
I've been on both sides of this, usually on the receiving end. I've usually just dealt with it and as it wasn't that big of a nuisance to me when shooting. However, today I was shooting my Glock and it just so happens that the 2 guys next to me (who appeared like they were first time shooters with their rentals and shooting antics) tapped on my shoulder and pretty much demanded that I stop having my casings fly over. Fortunately, I had just finished and was packing up and leaving, but the guy was being pretty rude about it. Or was I in the wrong here because it could've some how been prevented by me?
Is there really anything that can be done to prevent this from happening when somebody asks you to stop? Unless I stand right next to the barrier to my right, so the casings bounce back and hit me, or I turn the gun sideways and shoot it "homie" style so my casings go straight up into the air, is there really any other way to prevent shell casings from flying over the barrier and into the next lane? Or is it just one of those things that happens and you can't really control? What's the overall consensus with "range etiquette" when it comes to flying casings?
I have once in a while had people complain to me about brass, but at a shooting stall there isn't much I can do aside from apologize and say I will make an attempt, beyond that it's in the hands of physics.
Usually it's the complete new guys complaining, sometimes it's even their gun hitting them and they claim it was you(this happened to me, I went to the range with a revolver and some guy in his 20s with a rented glock started yelling that I needed to hitting him with the ejecting brass from my "punk *** 9mm")Last edited by robcoe; 02-17-2016, 11:54 AM.Yes, I am an electrical engineer.

My problem with throwing brass really is not so much for the comfort of others, but because I want it all back, and part of yours too if your sleepin. Therefore, I use the aforementioned brass direction tool, also known as a towel.Fear is the spare change that will keep you broke

I've got plenty of dirty looks by guys running patches down the bore of their deer hunting rifle in between shots while its rigged to some sort of lead sled while he yells at his buddy behind him smoking a cigarette in the walking lane with some cheap Barska spotter on 80's era tripod with their non electronic hearing protection.
Dirty looks don't bother me.Comment

My ex has a perfect 5.56 round burn right between the tatas. I warned her not to wear the shirt she did her fault .You can't complain about flying brass at the range seriously. Just sad honestly .Comment

Yikes, those rookies have clearly never spent any time on a police or military range.
In my line of work, if you don't have a couple of burns from hot brass, you're not shooting enough.Comment
