What kind of rifle can I get for $500~$600...

in a .223 if I want to get into shooting distances of 400 yards + I'd like to stick with .223 just because I already got tons of ammo for my AR and don't want to bother stocking up on another caliber...ie .308.

Is .223 suitable for shooting longer distances? and what kind of scope (magnification-wise) would be ideal. I know scopes can cost a bank but something of an entry-level scope....

    Thanks!

(By "rifle", I meant single bolt action rifle) Thanks!

Howa 1500 is a great buy for the cash or a Savage.

        Thanks!!

I saw that Turners is having a Howa M-1500 Scope Package for $500 which includes a Nikko 3-10x44mm. It's not much savings from the regular price which is $540 but are they pretty decent rifles?

A .308 would be better for further distances. Especially if you want to shoot like 600-1000yds.

My son and I started with Howa 1500's and Nikko scopes, we had great success learned alot and had fun shooting. Both rifles where reliable great shooters. I would buy another.

I'm partial to either the Rem 700 or Win 70 rifles. There are others who love their Savages. In terms of scopes, I'd either go with a fixed 10X. Fixed gets you more for your money. If military snipers can get by on 10x so can you. Alternatively, I am really interested in the Redfield made in the USA by Leupold scopes. They cost no more than 200 and they have variable moddles w 10X as upper range. Plus these scopes have lifetime guarantee.
RIP Louis Awerbuck. I miss you and your training.

try and get one with a adjustable trigger. Good triggers make a huge difference in accuracy of your rifle.
Howa are ok but come with a heavy trigger pull.

                    Savage are nice

take a look at tikka rifles they are sweet I have one in a 223.

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.

I bought a CZ 527 American in .223 for $650.00, scope included. I love this rifle, the quality is hard to beat at this price range. http://cz-usa.com/products/view/cz-527-american/

Mendo, how do you like your mini 14 and do/can you mount a scope on it?? Don't remember seeing one with a scope. I could be wrong....

Great all around gun, just not that accurate (unless you put on a heavy barrel). For long distance accuracy you are better off with a Bolt action like a Howa, Savage, Rem700 etc

I would go with a 308 or 30-06 7mm. Savage Remington Tikka Winchester. Plenty of good rifles out there. 400 yards is not long distance. Any rifle today should be able to shoot 400 yards. I woud go with a heavier caliber. you never know when you want to go hunting or modify it for really long distance. The trick is to get a rifle that has aftermarket support. Well I shouldn't say that because you can have anything made for a rifle its a matter of how much its gonna cost you. There is a reason why people use Savages Remington Tikka Winchesters. They have aftermarket support and lots of it

Any of the standard bolt action rifles will serve you well.

Tikka (However, they only come in long-action.)
