Fud at Big 5 Richmond, CA

My friend, who has never purchased a firearm, went in to check out the S&W M-4 .22 on sale last week. The girl behind the counter stated that he could leave there that day with the rifle. She said all he had to do was provide a government issued I.D. and submit a thumbprint. He said he'd think about it and left. When he told me, I said it sounded like wrong information and that she is getting confused with AB 962 and ammunition. He still thinks the girl was right because she was an employee. My reply, "Of course she's right, what with all the training they go through..."

What do you guys think? It's been 12 years since I've bought a firearm so I honestly don't know but it sounds like the Big 5 employee is confused with AB 962.

Boy, I would go to that Big 5 and talk to the manager. That employee does not know what they are talking about and could get themselves and that guy into a LOTof trouble. She is confused with AB962 for sure!!

She's off her rocker and likely not allowed to process the sale of a firearm.

Well, she obviously needs some re-training - the 10-day wait is what she seems to have forgotten - but that's hardly FUD.

FUD - fear, uncertainty, doubt - is a deliberate effort to discourage some behavior by suggesting, without any supporting evidence, that the behavior might or will get someone into trouble.

That's not the case here. Being wrong is not the same as FUD.

No Big 5 in Richmond CA, according to Big 5.
The thing with firearms is that they are not like any other consumer product, simple ownership of one carries a lot of responsibility.

Big 5 here in Clovis is pretty squared away. The have the "10 day wait starts the AFTER you DROS" Big 5 policy thing of course. Other than that they seem pretty sharp.

Surprising that someone with so little training was behind the gun counter, but I would guess that as soon as you start the transaction the manager/trained individual would take over and would then explain the waiting period.

I've been in and out of there lately looking at shotguns and decided to go in today and get a Remington Security, 7 shot 12 gauge. On sale for $349.99 plus another 10% off. Out the door for $368.

There's a Big 5 in El Cerrito on San Pablo. It's near the Richmond border.

I say a truly mis-informed employee. I would definitely talk to the manager, if you care to explain to him/her what their employee said.

Cops on the street do not know the gun laws. Lot's of gun owners do not know the gun laws. Gun shop employees do not know the gun laws. So why would it be surprising that a sporting goods store that also sells guns would have an employee that does not know the laws. There will always be FUD. It is the people that hear FUD that do not have the sense to look up the FUD on-line before spreading it further that are the problem. I mean I am sitting at a computer with the ability to look up every gun law in ever state.

Sorry for misusing the term, FUD. I should have said she was misinformed instead. Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm going to tell my friend he should speak to the manager and let him or her know what happened. I asked him to clarify which Big 5 it was. It was the one in Pinole.

Is it possible, your friend being new to guns and gun laws, misheard what she said? It seems more likely that there was a communication breakdown. Maybe she thought he was asking about something else?
