My 1911 "starter" was a Rock Island Armory GI, that I bought for around 400 OTD. RIA makes a fine 1911. Unless you are looking for GI take a look at their tactical version.

Thanks again to everyone will all your post... Sorry for using the word "starter" what I really meant to say was my "first" 1911.. I also probably should of told you guys my price range as well. My range is going to be from 700 to 1100.. So what I'd want is a 1911 that is more quality for my buy. I hope that makes sense...
Thanks again to everyoneComment

Please take a look at the S&W 1911s as well. I am very fond of mine and they are nicely fitted from the factory. If you have someone that can help you out in picking one, I highly recommend doing so. I just helped a friend pick up a new 1911. We checked 3 and only one had the barrel fitted properly."Most people understand that guns deter criminals. If a killer were stalking your family, would you feel safer putting a sign out front announcing, "This Home Is a Gun-Free Zone"? But that is what the Westroads Mall did" (in Omaha, Neb).

They are excellent guns, but very over-priced. I'm pretty sure you won't find one anywhere near the price range you stated earlier (700 - 1100), definitely not a new one...
Personally, I'd get a Les Baer before a Wilson Combat. But that is also out of your range (and mine too, for now
).
A Springfield Mil-Spec will serve you well as a first 1911. It has all of the basic touches (lowered/flared ejection port, beveled magwell, decent sights, etc) that will save you some money if you decide to customize it later. And SA customer service is unbeatable.Comment

Very high end and expensive 1911 for very serious owners. Most of their full size models guarantee 1" @ 25yrds
. Usually has top of the line components. I wouldn't recommend as a first 1911 since you want to learn what the benefits of the components are and which ones are worth upgrading. It's like learning to drive on a lamborghini. You will also learn to maintain a lower end 1911 properly and can afford to get some newbie scratches on it.

For my first 1911 I'm going to go with a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special. The thin grips allow me to get a much better grip on the gun. Alas, it's out of your price range.
For that kind of money, I would take a look at the Springfield Loaded PX9109. Such a pretty gun...Or you could go stainless as a previous poster pointed out

I bought a fairly basic stainless Springfield in 1995. Have resisted all impulses to modify it, and it still shoots great. On the other hand I bought a Kimber Ultra Carry this morning. Also have a stock Colt Commander and Officers. In my opinion it's all good. Once you can shoot a stock 1911 really well you might be ready to move up. Otherwise you're just wasting your money (IMO).Last edited by SgtDinosaur; 04-01-2010, 4:56 PM.sigpicComment

Lots of really good .45's out there so take your time. I own several and use or carry each one for something different. I have a CCW permit and like to carry my HK .45 "C" model since it is double-action on the first shot unlike my other guns. Several manufacturers have a DA model and I recommend it for personal or home defense.
Had a Les Baer - - very accurate, very expensive, very pretty and declined to carry it for the last two reasons. If you carry expect to get scratches and dings - it just happens. I want to shoot it not admire it or boast about it.
Shop around - look for a USED .45 at your price. $$ in hand will get you a good deal in these hard times. Often the seller will throw in extra stuff for pennies on the dollar, e. g. like extra mags, holsters, ammo, etc.
I also have a Springfield Armory Champion model that is a great shooter. It has been back to SA twice in past years and always comes back to me in a sweeter condition than before. The SA folks are a delight to deal with and have always been fair.
You will have FUN no matter what you buy. Just get out to the range and use it. You might look into reloading ammo for your .45 since it is simple to do and saves lots of money.Comment
