It's a pretty recent addition. It's because the Mexican military has been buying a bunch of P90s and FiveseveNs lately. Personally, I don't understand the obsession some countries have with banning "military" calibers. A 7mm-08 will kill you just as dead as a .308.

You're right, you probably can't find 7mm ammo as easily as 308 though and I don't think there's any tactical rifles in 7mm is there?

From what i heard one would do more that "some" jail time.

            so much fud here.

the 5.7 and 357SIG are legal mexico's law says that the bullet can't be bigger than 9mm or be listed as military/LEO use only, 357 sig is a 9mm bullet and the 5.7 round is smaller than 9mms so both are legal. as far as rifle rounds go, I think everything goes as long as it's a bolt action except the 50bmg.

Mexico's law lists calibers by name for both rifles and pistols. It also bans calibers bigger than 9mm; for rifles it is .30 caliber and shotguns 10 ga.

FWIW... I've read that US Secret Service snipers have 7mm Rem Mag rifles in their inventory.

Aside from my previous response, it should also be noted that semi-autos in legal calibers are legal in California. I don't recall if they have any SBR restrictions, but the only other ones I know of are no folding bayonets (as bayonets are illegal, as are sabres and lances) and no automatic weapons. Shotguns are limited to a 26" minimum barrel length. Pretty much anything else goes as long as it meets caliber restrictions, which themselves have a few exceptions. One is also limited to 10 long guns and 2 pistols I believe, but that number may be off slightly.
