Yes, I see an Ar 5-7, those guy's guys really like the 5.7 cartrige. If you look at pictures from fire fights you'll see a lot of cars with tiny holes, most likely caused by 5.7x28mm bullets.

It's hard to get ammo and what not for common military calibers there as it's illegal for citizens to own guns in military chambering hence the popularity of the 38 super over there. Not that these guys follow the law but the 5.7 can be a very effective PDW type weapon.

I've seen pics of a bunch of FN P-90s confiscated from the cartels, so they probably got some 5.7 AR uppers to utilize the magazine compatability.

From what I know 38 supers are also illegal, those fall into a gray area. If you're caught with one they only take it away. If you're caught with a 45 or a 7.62x39 you go to jail. 38 special and 380 acp are ok and perfectly legal.

.38 super is indeed legal in mexico. Not 7.62x39 they use 5.56 NATO. There are a couple calibers that are banned there because of milt/police use there.

Guys I dont think drug cartels care about was legal or not!!! They carry what they think is good. They love the 38 super cause its fast and a great penetrating round same goes for the 5-7. They dont beleive in overpenetration.

Wrong, there's tons of 1911's in Mexico because 38 supers were completely legal before 1976 when the current gun legislation came into effect. They are also imported illegally into the county. Of course you can buy .38 super guns and ammo in Mexico, you can also buy authentic MP5's and FS2000 as well. Why are we even debating over this? drug cartels can get their hands on what ever guns they want and don't give a damn if it's legal or not.

.38 Super used to be a legal caliber, but they eventually decided to add it to the banned list; I have a copy of the Mexican gun control legislation, and .38 Super is one of the prohibited calibers. 7.6X39 is NOT banned; it is used by police, but it is not on the list of banned calibers (the military does not use it).

This is what is banned:

.38 Super

.38 Commando (never heard of it)

.357 Magnum

9mm Luger

5.7X28 FN

All pistol calibers bigger than 9mm Luger (multiple ways to interpret this; exemption from pistol caliber prohibitions w/ carry permit for those calibers, but the government has rescinded most of those and no longer issues them)

5.56X45 NATO

7.62X51 NATO

7X57 Mauser

.30 Carbine

.30-06 Springfield

6.8X43 SPC

Any rifle caliber larger than .30 caliber (there are a few exceptions related to hunting and collecting)

Any shotgun caliber larger than 10 guage
