Is the risk for harm in Mexico greater that it was a year ago, absolutely. But… You can go and look and find trouble anywhere! Would I go and hang around any border towns, not if I could avoid it. A whole bunch of US expats live there every day and they are not heading back anytime soon. I strongly recommend staying away from drugs and keeping the booze intake to moderate/ low levels.

The risk of being harmed is less than driving through such nice places as West Oakland or Richmond. It seems there is a whole lota paranoia out there. I really like my fellow calguners but some of you really guys sound like big wimps. I have a great time with firearms, shooting, hunting with them and building them but sometimes the note of fear that permeates though this screen smells bad.

My wife and I went camping in Baja for over two weeks last year… no problemo. In fact the folks we came in contact with bent over backwards to make us comfortable. I’ve been down in Baja riding dirt bikes for years (and still don’t hablo too good). Get away from the cities and tourist traps and the people are awesome. Do I like camping without a firearm? NO! but I am careful and do bring what I can to protect myself. The most important weapon I bring is my common sense, a smile and being aware at all times.

You're talking to some sheep here. That's how they also vote. TVs and newspapers! They all must be true.

Common sense! What the hell is that? Was never taught that and it's too late to learn.

All these years living under a rock is nice and safe. Let's drag some people down to this rock too to show them the world.

I went to Rosarito three times last year the economy and violence has taken a toll on the local economy. Was at Papas and beer on a Saturday night and we were the only ones in the place, we got a great deal on beer and great service all night had the fire pit and the whole place to our selves. This is a place back in the day would have a few thousand people inside.

Use Common sense and don't get too drunk a great time is waiting for you there are great Lobster deals in Preto Nevo.

There are military check points but never had any issues.

I plan to return 4 of July and blow off some great fire works on the beach and have fun..

What we always do is park on the US side, and taxi to Roasrito. It costs about $20 bucks and on the return they will drop you off right at the port of entry walk way. Like others have stated use your head, and do not attract attention. I usually go with my wife and three other girls, and act like their personal security. I don't drink too much, and keep them out of trouble. Your camera equipment might be a big target though. Basically don't take anything you cannot afford to lose.

I fish alot in Ensenada and visit Rosarito every now and then. Once you're in Rosarito, you will be fine. It's TJ and the drive that you have to be more worried about. Don't be flashy and be polite when passing through check points or when the military police aka Federales with FAL's stop you and search around your car. Have cash for tipping police ready just in case. Once you enter TJ passed the US/Mexico borderline, stay on the very far left lane and stay away from the right lane. Police is already there ready to pull you over and hastle you for money. Don't be a big "I'm american" red flag while there. You don't wanna be kidnapped and beheaded, lol. J/K! I'm asian and my buddies that I fish with are all asian or white, but we lay low. But it helps if someone speaks spanish of course. Some of us speak it somewhat, but money talks down there, just don't flash it.

                Exactly.

Don't be afraid to go to Mexico. When you hear about American citizens being victims of violence in border towns they tend to be MEXICAN AMERICANS that have something to do with drug trafficking or are causing trouble down there.

Rosarito sucks, but if you're getting paid to be there, keep your head on straight and don't carry weapons. If you do get stopped by the cops, don't try and bribe them, that lands you in jail, ask if you can pay the fine on the spot, usually costs $10-100 depending on the violation, and how many kids the cop has at home. If you get bored, Ensenada is about 45 minutes to an hour south, go to the big flag at the port and ask around for directions to Paris, it's a block away, and always a good time, fun for the whole family.

I would use the money you earn shooting the wedding and go somewhere better to have some fun, San Filipe, Ojos, or just camp on the beach somewhere roughly a 1/2 tank south of Ensenada.
