Very safe. Act like you are in East Oakland and you will be fine.

I guess that sounds flippant........don't flash expensive stuff, know where you are going, avoid staying out after dark, all that stuff.

And have 5 $20 ready to tip the police just in case.

If you're asking, that means you are hesitant. Personally, I wouldn't do it, but that's just me.

Come on, what could possibly happen at a Mexican wedding in the middle of narco-trafficking country?

There will be someone within a rock's throw who can speak English.

I go there every other month, no problems other than paying for tickets (which I deserved) in cash. Be sure to check out Tacos Jr. at the south of town and Ortega's on the west side of the main drag near the north of town.

You other guys are pretty wimpy, imo. It IS the 51st state.

Might be wonderful. Or it might be your worst nightmare. Let's see, you're American, have lots of expensive camera equipment, are distracted by the work you're doing, will probably be driving back at night, have lots of cash on you because you're obviously rich, etc. I'm a photographer too and I've passed on jobs like that because of the risk. Just not worth it.

Pretty much my experience and thoughts, though I haven't been down there since the increased violence in the last year. Honestly don't stand out as richy rich, don't be alone much with your camera gear. It's usually wrong place at the wrong time as g-man says. And drive through TJ.

Rosarito is a total tourist trap, by Mexico standards. Don't go wandering down any back alleys late at night, drunk, and you'll be fine. Be prepared to sit at the border in your car for hours waiting to get back into the U.S. Don't forget, you need a passport nowadays to cross the border.

I wont go to Mexico because I refuse to add to the money that US tourism supplies to the country. There is plenty of stuff for me to see and do right here in the USA.

Wouldn't do it. I used to take several motorcycle trips each year down that way with a riding buddy, you couldn't pay me to do it now.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

A friend of mine asked me if I wanted to drive to Cabo with him to meet up with some friends. I couldn't go because of work but he kept emailing us to let us know he got there safely and on his return trip. I was worried but he made it back ok. You can do it but its a scary time there now. Just keep in contact with people to let them know how you're doing. You may also consider asking someone to go with you. GL with your travels.

Cross at the Otay Mesa border crossing. Maybe a 1 hour wait compared to 2.5+ hours at the San Ysidro crossing.
