    Bayonets

Just a General question for any Calgunner who's seen Combat or been in the Field.

At any point did you ever use your Bayonet in mounted form on your weapon?

I guess I'm just curious because my friends who've come back never mention using them mounted. I also never see them on any footage over the internet or in the news.

I always figured blades were more of a service tool and less of a weapon since World War I. I remember reading that soldiers found their spade shovel tools more effective at close range fighting that their bayos, But theirs always things in non-combat situation that need cutting.

(Unless maybe in some special forces capacity)

There are accounts of bayonets being used by US troops in WWII. Also in WWII, Soviet infantry with 91/30s and M44s were REQUIRED to keep bayonets fixed in the field, so the bayonet lived on as a spear conversion for rifles past WWI.

The AK bayonets have wire cutters built in (with the sheath), that's more of a combat-situation cutting tool, for cutting barbed wire, etc.

IMO, the modern bayonet is there for psychological reasons. Too bad the M16 with bayonet fixed looks so weak it probably has the opposite effect.

They're really useful when you use a beaten-up rifle to stake a tent down...

The British Army has found them useful in Iraq. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were involved in a bayonet charge back in 2004. Wonder if they were using SA80's... Yikes!

This reminds me of that mouseguns AR, AK, MOSIN COMPARISON joke.

Stuff you Know if you have an AK: Your bayonet makes a good wire cutter.
Stuff you Know if you have an AR: Your bayonet makes a good steak knife.
Stuff You Know if you have a Mosin: Your bayonet is longer than your leg.

AK: You can intimidate your foe with your bayonet mounted.
AR: Your foe laughs when you mount your bayonet.
Mosin: You can bayonet your foe on the other side of the river without leaving the comfort of your hole.

Awesome! Thanks for that link! Looks like I've got some reading to do about the Falklands conflict and if I can find more about that specific battle.

                  Too Funny!

I'll have to remember that for the next time I see someone with a Bayonet on their rifle.

in somalia, we actually mounted them to do some 'crowd control'/ a few times at some food distribution points. we trained with them for crowd control when we almost got sent to la for the riots. one unit left pendleton and we were next but didnt have to go.

I was just going to try and dig that quote up . Such an awesome thread.

The M9 bayonet also has a wire cutter with the sheath.

                          <snip>
By 9 a.m. the Scots Guards were in control of Tumbledown. The battalion had lost nine dead and forty-three wounded, and one of the Guardsmen was to lose his way in the dark, to hide for more than a month, not realising that the fighting was over.
