delivering a 845lb gun safe

I finally did it , well my wife did i should say, bought me a Browning Medallion series gun safe it weighs 845lbs, im wondering if anyone has had experience in carrying one in the back of there pick up truck, will the suspension hold that weight.
I have a full size ford Bronco that with the back seat out will fit the safe, but im concerned about the weight been the issue, plus will my tailgate hold the weight as it is transferred into the Bronco. Ive witnessed the same safe with the same weight been loaded into the back of a pick up that seemed to have after market suspension it didnt have a problem but im concerned about my truck. Currently i paid for delivery $150 but iof i could safely do it myself i should opt to do so.
So what do you guys think.

I definitely wouldn't trust the tailgate.

Suspension? Can you and 4 of your buddies sit in the back?
Your headlights will be high, but it should be able to handle the weight.

The biggest issue... can YOU physically handle nearly 1/2 ton?

How many full sized adults will your Bronco seat? how much do they weight?

I cant speak to your Bronco exactly but 845 lbs is around the weight of 4 big guys (That you'll probably need to help unload it)so I would guess not to much trouble. Being its a full size it is probabaly based on an F-150 which should easily handle 2000 lbs. Just make sure your tires are properly inflated.

I hauled a full size safe in the back of my gmc 1500 PU. No problem but I did remove the tail gate. Hire a safe company to get it out of the truck and install it for $50.

I think your right, its half a ton i would have to deal with and driving it back 30 miles in the rain, i think i should stick with the delivery charge that way its on them if they mess up.

If you are going to do it yourself, Rent a small low trailer. Uhaul has them for like 20.00 a day. The one I like is a dual use trailer for motorcycles. Unloading from a normal pickup height can be tough. The trailers are only a few inches off the ground and if you tip up the tongue it will go to the ground. The trouble with most safes is they are too heavy for the design of the floor. My wife is an engineer and she has done several designs for people where safes went through floors. Floors are normally designed for 40PSF per code. Pounds per square foot......they add up pretty quickly.

Way back when, my 1965 Chevy C-10 handled it with no problems. I used a piece of plywood and layed the safe on it.

When it was time to unload, just slid the plywood to the edge of the tailgate and sliding it out about 1/3 and lowering it to the ground.

Pay the $150 and have it delivered. Chances are it WILL get scratched, dented or dinged by trying to do it yourself. Besides that, it'll cost you that much to buy beer, food for the number of guys that you'll need to move that beast.

Seems most places are only doing curbside or garage these days.
You might get one every now and then that'll deliver to the ground floor.
I haven't seen any that'll deliver and place upstairs for $150.

If you've never moved a safe before, I would recommend having someone who has done this a few times help you out, otherwise the "garage" drop off is a good investment, particularly for a safe this size and weight. Making a mistake could result in property damage at the minimum and serious injury or death at the worst. I've moved LOTS of safes including setups on second floors negotiating stairs and tight switch backs and it takes some experience and technique plus the right equipment.

Your Bronco may be able to handle the weight, but you have to think about how you're going to get it lifted up that high. Once it's in, you also have to consider how you're going to tie it down so that it won't move around. If you got in an accident while transporting it, you surely wouldn't want an 845# safe moving around in the cab.

If you don't want to pay the $150-$200 it may cost to have the safe delivered and placed in your home, you may want to consider renting a drop floor trailer. These make it much easier to load/unload the safe, and you can tie it down to the trailer securely.
