I spend my $ with the FFL's that smile and take on the PPT without hassle, so from my standpoint it is a money maker. The two shops right down the street from me are a holes when it comes to PPT and they overcharge. I drive 15 miles south to spend my Money with the shops that treat me right. I think the FFL's with good business sense realize this.

My receipt from a PPT at Greta's two weeks ago says $35. Maybe they were charging storage fees before for the extra $5? If it was $40, someone straightened them out, because it seems that is no longer the case.

I've done PPT's at IAC, Greta's, Gunrunners, Bain & Davis, On-Target, OC Armory, and Oaktree.

I've had good experiences at all those places, except Bain & Davis and On Target. The guys at B&D himmed and hawed about doing a PPT at 12:00 pm on a Saturday, but when they got to us it seemed like everyone left the shop so the complaining stopped. I spent some money on snap caps and ammo because I thought they could use the business, no one was buying anything that day. On-Target made me buy a $7 lock when the handgun included a California approved OEM lock in the case with the PPT. If you don't mind buying the lock, On-Target is generally quick and easy.

By far, the best experiences have been at Gunrunners and IAC. Those two shops have been really cool and seem to just want to have you in the place. I've picked up a couple of guns since meeting the guys at Gunrunners and like the way they do business. Dimitry at IAC is always a blast to talk to and he has all the cool cal-legal rifle stuff, generally in stock or close at hand. I'd recommend either of those shops to anyone.

I do outa-state transfers at OC Shooting range in Brea where I shoot occasionally so I don't feel guilty. Also PPTs are usually done at various Turner's around the freakin' world which is usually the half-way point between the seller/buyer and I. I've heard some terrible PPT stories regarding Turner's but I've always delt with very personable and enthusiastic workers.

#1 reason FFL's hate doing transfers - survey says

            They lose money.

            Glock 17 on gunbroker $450
Glock 17 in average California Gun Store $650

A shop here really doesnt want business, so they charge 175 for FFL transfers...they even said it themselves..."We charge a high price to discourage people from not buying out of state."

Their closes down by the way.
