Why do FFLs hate doing transfers?

You can buy cheap ammo at walmart but if you want defensive ammo they do not have it. Heck they do not even have ammo any more.

Cheap actually is the best reason when we're talking about range ammo. Why should I spend $17-$19 for house reloads when I can buy WWB for just a little bit more and get twice the amount of ammo to plink with? Its not like I'm not supporting my shop. I still pay to shoot there. Another major contributing factor is that I live right next to a WM so while I'm doing my weekly diaper runs I might as well check their ammo inventory as well Oh btw WM sells PDX1 which IMO is a great SD round. Buy it cheap and stack it deep!

Bottom line is they lose money if they dont like doing it. Ive gone out of my way and bought 3 guns from IA last year in Freemont because they dont give you **** about PPTs. I avoid stores like GV in Mountain View who charge storage fees. So how much do you think their bottom line has lost now?

There is more than $10 in labor involved plus 10 days or more for storage. Not everyone picks up on the 10th day. Bottom line it's a money loser for most FFLs.

What's the big deal with FFLs doing transfers- PPTs and Out of states? I've filled out the yellow form 50+ times and just about every time I was done in about 10 minutes max.

If my cut is after fees is $10+ and it takes 10 minutes to do it if I'm taking my time; ignoring overhead, isn't that an income of about $50+ an hour? I'd figure that as a gunshop, I'd want to do nothing but transfers considering how many people there are in the PRK wanting to do them. Why waste the time dealing with tire kickers and overhead/holding costs if simple transfers probably have a higher ROI?

I'd think that it would be looked at like Soda in a McDonalds as opposed to a loss leader like a Black Friday sale.

We don't look at PPTs as money losers. We do 'em because that's what we're supposed to do. Personally, I like doing PPTs because it brings two folks into our store to potentially shop for other stuff. If I treat them right, they tell their friends and more people come into the store. They get what they want ans we make $$. Everyone wins that way!!

I enjoy doing transfers bring them all to me. I mainly like it cause it bring customers into my shop. Plus I enjoy meeting and talking to people so if you have a PPT or internet transfer great come in and run them through my shop.

well. yea. but I got good decent ammo for 10 a box. pmc 115 grain.

I dont think all ammo shoots the same at the range and if I am practicing I want something that is decent but not cheap cheap though. middle ground kinda.

I was just talking about handgun ammo in general. 223 at WM and my range is nearly the same price

I'm off to On Target for another PPT before the big game wish me luck! Shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes tops. I'll post here if I receive negative customer service

Just got back from On Target. They were pretty busy for a Sunday morning but their customer service keeps me going back every time. The gentleman that processed our PPT was extremely courteous and had no problems inputting our info into the computer. They were a very friendly and helpful staff even though they were busy and I was just there for a transfer. I always at least pick up cleaning supplies or targets whenever I pick up my firearms from them. +1 for On Target for PPTs!

I just did my first PPT. After searching the local stores who wanted up to $65, I found a guy that does it out of his house for $45. I'll continue to use him for all of my future PPTs.

$65 or $45 for a PPT? I thought the maximum a FFL can charge was $35?

How long has the fee been 10 bucks? When ppt dros started 10 bucks wasn't such a money looser maybe you even made a buck. Now all these years later its a looser.

I'll add to what some of the above posters have stated. Safe handling takes time, loging in and out takes time, finding the gun in the back takes time.

Not everybody in fact many people don't have their act together when transfering or buying a gun. No blame if you don't do it much you will need some hand holding.

$10 bucks aint much? Well, for sure dealers make up the differences by inflating their ammo and gun prices.

It's California law they can only charge $35 for the transfer but I think there's a way for them to charge some misc. fees so they just roll it up into a transfer fee.
