Recommendations for ammo storage

Hi everyone

I've got quite a bit of ammo sitting in my garage - about 20 flats of shotgun shells, plus thousands of rounds of rifle and handgun ammo. I'd like to get it into a secured cabinet, but I'm worried about finding something that would take the weight, and isn't too expensive (used is OK).

Anyone have any recommendations? I was wondering if any of the office lockable steel cabinets would be sturdy enough. I've looked at some of the job site boxes, but they are thousands of dollars.

Just kidding, sorry for the snarky answer but I don't have any suggestions for a cabinet - I use open shelves myself. Are you trying to protect it from casual theft?

20 flats....that...Do you mean flats like pallets?! I don't have enough room in my garage for 20 pallets of anything.

Sorry, I meant "flats" of shotgun ammo - i.e. 250rounds in a sealed box. For some reason us shotgunners call them flats.

To answer the other questions - I just want to get it locked up to prevent casual theft - with ammo at the prices today, I want to be careful.

Ohhh ok, that sounds better lol. I work at a grocery store, we've always called our pallets "flats". Wording confusion on my part.

I have the same box at home for my shotgun/.223/30.06 ammo. Works great. Just make sure what you want is on top.

I use a 30 year old "Moser Secret Clearance" 2 drawer file for my pistol ammo. It has a mechanical combination on the front and heavy steel plate all over. It's not bad opening but a real bear to slam shut.

Shotgun shells were sold by the case which was 500 rds. They call them flats so they won't be confused with cases.

Personaly I found that a used KNAACK job box wilol hold a huge load of ammo and its hard to break into quickly and easily
Also big enough to store some guns in there also

Try and find some old school lockers. I have a "bank" of ten on one side of my garage. Great for storing ammo as well as other items. I build shelves inside each one. I can get six .50 cal cans in each locker.

I got mine from a Govt auction a few years ago for $50.00. Check on line for any for sale in your area.

36" wide x 78" high x 24" deep, and holds up to 750 pounds with a locking door. Got it online for $340 including delivery.
