Mosin 91/30

I just picked one up on Saturday, and finally shot it today. A friend has a few acres in the hills, and has a target area set up. I was a little wobbly, but the grouping was pretty decent. The elevation is way off though. It was shooting about 12" high from the lowest setting, at 100 yards. Also, I will be adding a shoulder pad.

I love both my mosins. I have an M38 1943 Izzy and a 91/30 1941 Tula. I took my M38 out to knoxville before they closed and was hitting an old (and already punctured) fire extinguisher at about 300-350 yards. My 91/30 I haven't been able to shoot that far yet but it puts everything in the black about 2 1/2'' at 100 yards. my 91/30 I went through the 5 of them they had on the rack for sale and picked the best one. My M38 I got from big 5 for 89.99 and the 91/30 for 79.99 Both are fired with surplus

is there anything on the Mosin i need to look for before purchaseing, like any parts that seem to wear before others, what would you typically want to look for before buying the rifle? i'm not worried about the money being spent but i don't want a kaboom on my hands i had that happen on a .22 once and i can live without that happening on a larger caliber rifle, i also saw something about the rifle being coated in cosmoline, and it should be removed, any input on that? i was also wondering if i were to change anything on the rifle like say the stock would it trigger 922r?

What to look for:
make sure the serial #'s match (receiver, bolt, mag floorplate, buttplate)
inspect the bore (check for counterbore..some owners like it some dont)
obvious stuff like a good stock not cracked
cosmoline isnt a big deal, just heat it with a dryer and it melts off or use the black trash bag technique
if its from Big5 or any gunshop, the headspace should be okay. When buying from a private party, you might wanna get it headspaced checked.

(1) the assembly of any such rifle or shotgun for sale or distribution by a licensed manufacturer to the United States or any department or agency thereof or to any State or any department, agency, or political subdivision thereof; or
(2) the assembly of any such rifle or shotgun for the purposes of testing or experimentation authorized by the Attorney General.

i am also thinking about it there are after market stocks and even a after market trigger from timny. the accessorized ones look nice rifles you cant tell there almost a hundred years old.

i went to my local big 5 to check them out, thats one heavy and long rifle. i kinda wish the finish was done better but that couldv've just been poor selection on hand, all serial numbers matched so i'm just going to wait until they go on sale next week and probably pick one up. ammo was 20 and some change for 20 rounds, i think they are a little high on that.

I finally shot my 91/30 on Monday. Yikes. Maybe I just need more practice with it, but it's about as accurate as I expected. I actually shot better off-hand than I did off the bags. I also shot my K98 and that was quite a bit more accurate.

the guy at the counter said they go about every other week in that store, if i have to wait a few weeks thats fine to, i'm not in a big hurry, but i do see them in the paper on sale quite often so i'm not sweating it.

I bought one from Big 5 a while ago and the gun is a lot of fun to shoot! For the $99.00 you pay for it you can't go wrong. It has pleanty of power and ammo is easy to get!
