i've been entertaining the idea of buying one of these rifles, what some of my friends call the cheapie rifle, but i was wondering over all how do they perform? i don't really want to buy a POS that couldn't hit the brad side of barn from 100 yds, i was thinking about using it for 600 plus yards, i saw a few youtube vids of people shoot from a good distance but i'd rather talk to some first hand expierenced people that own or have shot these rifles, are there any really bad negatives to them or are they just a good deal on an ok rifle?

Mosin 91/30

At 600 yards even with a scope you can't expect to hit anything if you don't shoot and know your weapon. I'd call the Mosin what it is, a 100 -200 yard battle rifle with open sights. I'm sure there are some that can shoot beyond that with iron, but your talking a lot rounds and range time to be accurate. -gIf ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.

As you can probably tell, I love my mosins. As long as they are in good condition bore wise, they are a great buy. My 37 Tula consistently hits pumpkins at 350 yards.
91/30's are cheap, and so is the ammo, so it is hard to go wrong. Since you are looking for a shooter, the most important things are bore and crown. If they are in good shape, you should have a good shooter. 3-4 moa at 100 yards with surplus ammo is about the average that I've found for 91/30's.Originally posted by GoodEyeSniperMy neighbors think I'm a construction worker named Bruce.

Fun to shoot, cheap to shoot, relatively easy to maintain (once you first clean out the bore after buying it at least), and just nice to have around to plink with.
You'll never go wrong buying a Mosin, especially at their sale prices.Comment

We need to have a summer Mosin shoot and take over a range. -gIf ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.

i'm just looking for one rifle of a larger caliber that doesn't an arm and leg to shoot, i don't really like to plink with my hunting rifles unless i'm sighting in or making some kind of adjustments to them, so i figured i'd look into a mosin but a friend also said he likes to shoot his SKS but thats not exactly cheap anymore, so i'm kinda torn between the mosin and an sks but leaning towards the mosin as of right now. i have never owned one or really know to much about them so thats why i asked here first. thanks for all the info guys.5.56: reach out and touch someone.

It's apples and oranges and I own both. I'd get a Mosin as it will be half the price of an SKS for a basic one.
An SKS round (7.62x39) is much like a 30-30 in power and a 100yard max shooter in my opinion. Don't get me wrong it's accurate inside that range and very handy and quick to point on target for me. -gIf ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.

lol Mosinitus is horrible especially when you want to collect every Mosin from all different arsenals. A coveted M91/59 is still on my list. Having a group of guys on the firing line with mosins is tons of fun."1911 mag, twinkie, twinkie, cupcake, primary weapon mag"

I love Mosins. I have a 91/59, it is a good shooter (really nice smooth bolt on mine too). I do need a 91/30 (with the bayonet of course), and an M44, and maybe a 91/30 sniper as well.
The deep "boom" the gun makes is always enjoyable.-Sean CaseyComment

is there anything on the Mosin i need to look for before purchaseing, like any parts that seem to wear before others, what would you typically want to look for before buying the rifle? i'm not worried about the money being spent but i don't want a kaboom on my hands i had that happen on a .22 once and i can live without that happening on a larger caliber rifle, i also saw something about the rifle being coated in cosmoline, and it should be removed, any input on that? i was also wondering if i were to change anything on the rifle like say the stock would it trigger 922r?Last edited by Sam .223; 02-01-2010, 4:48 PM.5.56: reach out and touch someone.
