Besides the quality of the safe being important, the quality of the warranty is also important IMO. Most of the safe companies I checked out when buying a safe require you to pay for shipping if a repair is needed. That is $200-$300.

Cannon is one of the few that doesn't. I know there are a few others, but don't recall them. Cannon will send someone to your location to try and fix any problem. If not possible, they will ship it both ways at their expense.

I had to use them because the rubber seal was being squeezed out when the door closed. They fixed it once and when it occurred again, they told me the door must be warped and they brought a new safe out and took the old one away. They could have replaced the door, but they didn't.

    I'm happy with Cannon.

I bought a big safe from Sportsman Steel close to 20 yrs ago for about $300. It kind of lacks the refinement of some other safes I've seen but has served me well.

the only opinion i can give is more like advice. if you are relatively grounded at your current residence. go big the first time. if you are into guns and are planning a collection. go big the first time. if you dont you will run out of space and need to buy again. if the safe is fire rated and secured properly you should be fine

Oh, one more very important thing: If you intend to secure your safe into the foundation by putting bolts thru the safe, please ensure you do not have a post tension slab.

Those slabs, usually 5" thick, have an array of steel cables or rebar running thru them at the 2 1/2" level. If you drill into them, you not only face the possibility of serious injury, but even death.

When I was going to do it (I live in a single story), the superintendent of the site advised me not to. He said he knew of workers being injured and some even decapitated when the cable whipped out. Something to think about.

Holy ****. Never thought about that...

The fate of the wounded rest in the hands of the ones who apply the first dressing.
