    2/19/07: Iron Sights in Oceanside

Going shooting tomorrow at Iron Sights, in Oceanside. I'll be there around 7:30pm (as usual, for every other Monday), probably with my usual rogue's gallery of IT workers, UNLESS the range is closed for the day (doubtful, but check here; I intend to call tomorrow to make sure).

Anyone who wants to go shooting that night, feel free to say hi. If there's anyone yet who hasn't put rounds downrange with a Monsterman-gripped AR, this is your chance. Also bringing along my 50 beowulf, naturally. I'll let anybody who wants, have one free shot with the Beowulf... but I'm not into giving free ammo to the world at large.

I'm going to try out my new 7.62x39mm load, too. Hopefully it'll cycle an AK in semi... but I'll bring along my PAR-1 too just in case it doesn't.

If you want to hang out with my crew after the range run, we usually hit Angelo's on Coast Highway afterwards. Exquisite carne asada burritos, and very nice chili fries. They also have gyros, burgers, etc.

I love Iron Sights. I'm not sure whether its becasue I never have to go back to American Shooting Center or its just because IS is so great. Either way I always have left with a big smile on my face.

I think it's because at the prices IS charges, you actually have money left over for ammo after you've paid for your lane time.

Side note, I'm a member, so I don't have to pay. I do miss living in Oceanside...

ASC... way higher price on lane time, and I never bothered checking their ammo prices.

Rental fees are $10; Iron Sights is $5/firearm or FREE if you're a member (or shooting with one).

Fewer lanes. Iron Sights has 12 lanes on the rifle side ALONE, while ASC only has 14 total.

But the most critical issue to me is, they close way too early for an indoor range. Those turkeys close down at 7pm! Iron Sights is open until 10pm... you can put in a full day at work at your day job, and then go to the range afterwards. ASC closes too early to allow this. That's fine for people without day jobs, but for the rest of us, it's lame unless you take a day off just to go shooting.

I think I saw some posts from other members talking about ranges up north that're open until midnight...

I live only a couple of miles from ASC, and I never bother going there for the reasons above.

                    Darn!

I had so much crap to do today. That sounded like a blast too, lemme know how it went.

No one else showed up, so it was just me.

However, in the lane right next to me, a guy showed up with a pre-ban, registered Steyr AUG and an H&K SL8. Unfortunately, he had a whole crew with him so I didn't get to shoot 'em, but I did show 'em the off-list AR's.

I also forgot my Beowulf ammo, so it's probably for the best that I didn't have to shell out the big bucks to buy new Beowulf ammo there at Iron Sights.

However, I will say that 30.5gr of Hodgdon H335 with 123gr FMJ's does seem to cycle AK's perfectly! I'm going to build up a bunch more of the stuff now that I know it works.

I also got lucky - someone was shooting metric craploads, and I do mean craploads, of 5.7x28mm! I happen to know that Iron Sights doesn't reload that caliber, so at least a hundred rounds of the brass made it into my bag. It left me wondering at first if someone had been mag-dumping ps90s, but they were thrown too far forward to be ps90 droppings.

The facilities are fine, but prices are way high and I've never walked out of there without hearing something utterly ridiculous or stupid from the staff.

My personal favorite was when one of the folks that worked there was going to give me a "steal" on 2 consecutive numbered SA GI 1911's for only $1350. It would have been theft alright.

I have never shot a monsterman equipped AR, would like to give it a try before I decide to go that route. Would not mind sending a few downrange out of a SOCOM either.. Can be there anytime after 6pm or so, have been going at least once every 3 weeks for the last few months. Perhaps we can get an informal calguns shoot planned at I.S.

Can bring ammo, my SU16, Sig 229, Mossberg 590 and a Nagant or two.

I'm good on weeknight evenings too. This week is fairly busy, maybe this Sunday evening, or next Thursday.
