You have way too many calibers which makes me think you're a collector and not a shooter. How often do you shoot? How much of each do you shoot?

You can either buy ammo today and deprive yourself of something else, or buy it when you go out to shoot, but pay more at that time.

No one but you knows which is better.

Personally, guns are a tool for me and I only have 2 calibers.

500 of anything you dont shoot regulary, couple of thousand of the ones you do, try to double up on ammo that you have multiple weapons for. i have 4 guns that shoot .22, two pistols, 2 rifles. im trying to get at least 10k stocked up.

i have multiple rifles that shoot .223, would like to have at least 5k of that.

i love my .45, so i have 100 HD JHP and 1k tula.

1k of 9mm just because i like to shoot my p95.

couple hundred shotgun shells for just in case in various flavors.

WWB 40 cal ammo at walmart is double what I remember paying for it in 2005 when I bought my XD pistol, and that is if you can find it. I now reload for all of my center fire ammo, so I am stocking up on supplies.

I am going to try and stock up on 22 LR ammo at walmart since it is still cheaper than even buying it on the internet. I can eat up a bulk pack each time out and the price has slowly crept up even at walmart. I won't loose money by buying cheap right now, but I have to use money that I could spend on other things.

Same thing for shotgun shells, its cheaper at walmart and it's possible that they will stop carrying ammo due to the hassle of new laws, so it can't hurt to stock up.

When/If SHTF, no one is going to be carrying 5K in ammo on them. Not practical.

I'd be alright with 5000 rounds each in the major centerfire calibers I own and shoot a lot (9mm, .45 ACP, 5.56mm, 7.62x51, 7.62x39, 5.45x39, .30-06) and 1,000-2,000 in the ones I don't use as often (.357 Mag, .44 Mag, .30 Carbine). I'd like to have 20,000 rounds of .22 LR, 1,000 12ga shells and a good reloading set up to boot. I don't have the above, but I'd be feeling confident if I did. Ironically right now I'm having to sell off some of my stash to pay for other things I need and want.

I would say a minimum of 1k for pistols and rifles (much more for 22). 500 for 12 gauge in different shot types is good. I am no where near this mark yet.

Nobody said anything about carrying it around. You won't live to long if you're out wondering around during SHTF. The idea is to stack in enough so ideally you don't have to leave, and can defend where you're at.

Defend your house with a couple thousand rounds of ammo? All it takes is 2-3 well placed individuals, armed, to easily overcome a static position.

I like to keep a lot of .40 and .45 around. Since we're about to be treated like criminals in this state and have our online pipeline cut off, I'm buying online with regularity and filling the bottom of the safe. I like to shoot every week if I can, so I do burn through it as well.

Hopefully the legal wheels will turn in our favour, but I'd like to feel somewhat prepared for a potential horrendous outcome and have a good supply on hand.

For me the issue is availability, both now and in the future. If you could just stop by the store and replenish what you shot at the range that day, then one day's shooting supply would be all you'd need. In fact, I remember for years having no stash at all and just stopping by to pick up ammo a few days before a range day. However, I live in L.A. where you can't get ammo shipped to from the internet and I am a good 1/2 hour from a WM that sells ammo, so I have been stocking up whenever I find decent prices. I have several thousand rounds of the calibers I shoot occasionally and probably over 5,000 of 9mm and 10,000 of .22 . I drive around for my job, so if I'm near a WM, I just stop in. It's sorta like Christmas (ooh, wonder what they'll have today). Often the shelves are blank, but sometimes I score. Doesn't seem like a waste of money since I could probably dump it all in a weekend here on CG (if I wasn't out to RAPE anybody, and just wanted my money back). BTW, I AM of the opinion that ammo will get more expensive and more rare as the country continues to move to the left, so there's that, too.

Maybe the "normal" suburban house, but I'm rather strategically located and have made a few stealth upgrades so you'd have to bring armor to overtake mine with only 2-3 people.

I think I once shot up to 400, but that was all day, and that was all I was shooting. 500 rounds is a lot of ammo, even worse if your shooting a Mosin!

I'm going to disagree with this statement. There are multi-day classes where you shoot 500+/- rounds in a single day, per day, throughout the weekend.



Furthermore, hang around the .50 cal guys such as 50shooter, iRight, and Mr Kubota, you'll see 500 rounds is a breeze.

Every time I see this thread I think that it's someone talking about starting up a store that sells nothing but ammunition.

How cool would that be? A store dedicated to selling nothing but ammunition? You could cut way down on operating costs and licensing since you wouldn't be selling guns or any other nonsense and you wouldn't need a large store front because you'd just have shelves.
