First off let me say I am not an ammo horder and I do not think the world is ending in 2012. With that said here is my question:

Whens enough enough when it comes to ammo. How much is enough ammo?

I have in calibers:

308
223
22lr
38
357
9
45
40
12g

is 500 of each caliber enough? or since 22lr is inexpensive should I get 2k of it and 500 of everything else.

500 is a good start -- enough for an afternoon of shooting. Or a morning Zombie hunting ... or ...

Around here, you're going to hear "Never Enough!" or "All you can afford!" or "Sell your coat and buy more!" or "Take out a loan!" or "I'll take it!" or "This thread is worthless without pics!" or anything else you can imagine except: "Good job! You're well prepared."

For a little fun do a search for pictures others have posted of their ammo supply.

On a more serious note: One man hopes your numbers are needlessly large while another man is certain he can't possibly be prepared enough. On time will tell which outlook is the prudent one.

500 per caliber is a good stash for a trip to go shooting but you will want more than that for the guns you shoot the most.

500 goes quick on a day at the range.

I'd be alright with 5000 rounds each in the major centerfire calibers I own and shoot a lot (9mm, .45 ACP, 5.56mm, 7.62x51, 7.62x39, 5.45x39, .30-06) and 1,000-2,000 in the ones I don't use as often (.357 Mag, .44 Mag, .30 Carbine). I'd like to have 20,000 rounds of .22 LR, 1,000 12ga shells and a good reloading set up to boot. I don't have the above, but I'd be feeling confident if I did. Ironically right now I'm having to sell off some of my stash to pay for other things I need and want.

I don't think that I have shot 500 rounds of centerfire ammo in one day at the range in my life.

Since there is a good posibility that AB962 will not be retracted, I would go under the assumption that you will need to gather a "number" of years supply, plus any SHTF safety stock before Feb 2011... I would guess that you will feel that 500 rounds will be a bit lite when they start fingerprinting you for any additional purchases here... Unless the 500 is all going to be safety stock... While we can continue to do it, step up and spend a litte bit more and get wholesale bulk over the net...

If you can start reloading do so, not only will it save a few bucks down the road, but it is not that hard to obtain components right now. Plus you live in So-Cal going into NV or AZ is not really tough to do so. AB962 is primarily going after Pistol ammo so if you can or want to start reloading those now and stockpile it.

Personally I only shoot 9mm, 7.62 x 39 and .223 I reload my own 9mm and I am getting my .223 components soon. So I keep minimum 1K of each caliber around. I have done a few BLM days where I have used over 500 rounds of one caliber. Featureless can be fun but expensive too

Between several of us yes but never by my lonesome. Aimed shots take time so 500 aimed shots well you get the picture. Blasting can be fun to, but not to the tune of 500 rds at todays prices.
and that leads me up to my next point.
Ammo is scarce these days and bargain ammo is like the Tasmanian Tiger
Reported sightings but none in captivity.
From that angle I say buy it cheap and stack it deep.
That's my pitch What you need to determine is what your philosophy is. Are you preparing for dire circumstances or just keeping a stash handy for that spontaneous trip to the range? If the latter, then with the numbers you've given, I'd say you're good to go.

I am think I maybe an ammo horder because now that ammo prices are dropping I am buying as much as possible. I think I will make a goal of 1500 per slightly used round and 3000 of heavily used round and 5000 22lr.

For the average gun owner, I would say a case of 1K for each centerfire and 5K for rimfire to be a nice number to have. Of course, it really is dictated by how much someone shoots. Someone who shoots once every couple of months isn't going to need 1K per caliber vs. someone who shoots daily or weekly.

There are different mentalities, those who need ammo for "SHTF," those who need to to limit the amount they go to the fun store to buy ammo for the day, or for those who just think anyone under 10K rounds of ammo is a mere peon.

The simple truth is, the right amount of ammo depends on what you're comfortable with.

i have +5K of .22lr only cause each time i take my 10/22 out i go through 500 rounds... ha

as for my centerfire rounds... i'm trying to at least have 1K in each caliber with 200 of it being match grade and the rest just blasting ammo.

Nobody said anything about carrying it around. You won't live to long if you're out wondering around during SHTF. The idea is to stack in enough so ideally you don't have to leave, and can defend where you're at.
