Deputy's Gun Explodes in His Hand

Officials in Marshall County said they've learned it could have been the weapon -- not the ammunition -- that caused a gun to explode in a deputy's hand last week.

HUH? Does he mean non-jacketed bullets?

That is probably how he should have phrased his comment. The newer Glocks require jacketed bullets be fired through them.

Can you even get .45acp in a non-jacketed bullet? I don't know that I've ever seen one.

You can fire lead through your Glock all you want; you just need to be more diligent in cleaning the lead-build up out of the barrel. The hexagonal rifling fouls much more quickly than standard lands/grooves. Don't do a proper 'de-leading' between sessions and eventually the bore is constricted to the point that... kaboom.

It's not like firing a single lead round is going to hand grenade your pistol right out of the box.

I'm not so sure about this,as I fired about 100 or so Lead bullets last night through my glock at a night excersize and no Kaboom.

I've had a Glock "fotay" for about 12 years. I reload & all I've ever used is 180 grain hard cast lead bullets with a fairly warm charge of Blue Dot. Never had a problem.

From the officer.com article, it sounds kind of like an unsupported case head. That or the weapon went off out of battery somehow.

It would be interesting to see how this shakes out, but we never will.

I bought some .45 lead bullets that are coated with teflon "I was told" they are black. I bought them from Load X at the Vallejo gun show. Shot it out of my 21 and it worked fine. Don't know if the teflon coating will stop fouling.

Not as strongly worded as a requirement but page 15 of my glock manual states. "Glock does not recommend the use of unjacketed lead ammunition." Then again it's right above the part about using reloaded ammo voiding your warranty.

Also "Do not shoot the pistol near your stomach as the slide will sharply move back upon firing."
