Where to store handgun while vacationing?

If I go on vacation, then I have a dog sitter.
But, I am worried about leaving my handgun in the house in my safe while I am gone. Can't bring it with me. I trust my dog sitter, but you just never know.

I wouldn't want to have my friends "handgun sit", especially since none of them are gun enthusiasts and do not have a safe.

As much as I like you guys, I wouldn't let you "handgun sit" either, mainly because you are not my personal friend.

I asked a local gun shop and they said they don't do that, store firearms that is.

Anyone have ideas?

Maybe I should sell it?

if its a reasonable safe and you trust the person to house sit - just dont give them the key/ combo ?

you should take the firing pin out of all your guns and hide it then store your guns in the safe like usual.

If you don't trust it to be at your house in a safe with the dog sitter around, you should:
(A) Get a better, more secure safe.
(B) Get a new dog sitter.

You say handgun, singular.... TAKE IT WITH YOU... If that isn't an option, lock it in a case and leave the locked case with a friend...

If you have 100 of them, that might be an issue...

Compare the value of the handgun to the value of other items NOT left in the safe. Do you want to lock up your knives in the kitchen too? As much as I would hate to have a weapon stolen from my home and on the street, do you really want to worry while on vacation?

Have good insurance, and have the make/model/serial number somewhere in case you need to make a claim. Whens the last time you took photos of your belongings for insurance purposes?

This is a really good point.
I guess as long as I take all the safety measures that I can, then that is the best I can do.

I keep several in a safe that is probably not as good as yours. I have had many 'Dog Sitters' over the years.
I went on vacation once and left the house key with a contractor so he could remodel the bathroom while I was gone. The only thing I did differently was put a lock on the bedroom door where the safe was located. I am talking about a $10 Kwikset, not a deadbolt.
Personally, I do not think people who have access to your house are likely to break into your safe or otherwise steal from you. They all know they are the first suspect when the police are called.
Besides, what are the chances your 'Dog Sitter' is also a 'Safe Cracker'?

Put the gun in your safe, lock the door, and enjoy your vacation. Why worry about something like this?? There is way too much "what if" mentality in these forums. Do you have insurance too? If not, you may want to consider getting some at a very reasonable cost added to your homeowners or renters insurance. I hate to break it to you but your dog sitter probably cares less about the safe and more about what is in your refrigerator.

I would be more concerned about them raiding the liquor cabinet.
I would agree that you probably need a more trustworthy sitter.
