Yes, they are legal.Originally posted by tonyayoAre bullet proof vests legal in CA? If so where can I pick one up?
What kind of vest are you looking for? Concealable or BALCS panels (ie- tactical style)?Learning without thought is labor lost, thought without learning is perilous. -Foamy -
Don't know yet - I am not looking for anything military grade. I just want something that will stop most hand gun rounds. Something not too heavy, I don't think I will be in the position ever in my life where someone is gonna be shooting at me with a rifle. I just think it will be better to have one and not need it then need it and not have it. Same applies with CCW and condoms.Comment

I'd recommend a IIIa vest, as it is rated to stop "most" of the handgun ammo commonly available on the market. It might be a bit bulky, depending on the manufacturer, what material is used and how it is constructed.Originally posted by tonyayoDon't know yet - I am not looking for anything military grade. Right off the top of my head, take a look at the Enforcer Classic from US Armor.
It's made from Kevlar, not one of the composites that have been failing over the past few years.
There are quite a few other options out there, but I've had good experience with US Armor products over the years.
Another good site for info is [ www.bulletproofme.com ]. I know of a few guys over here who have bought armor from them, haven't heard of any complaints.
Make sure you don't cheap out if you decide to get a vest. There's definitely a distinction between getting a good deal and being a cheapskate when you're buying body armor.
If you need any more info let me know.Learning without thought is labor lost, thought without learning is perilous. -FoamyComment

i am constantly amazed by what that nifty little "search" function will do:
not to be an jerk or anything, but the same questions keep being asked.

To tell you the truth, I was going to search - but someone who worked at a gun shop told me bullet proof vests were illegal. I didn't want to search and find out they were outlawed just after that post or something. Guess a gun shop employee was wrong once again.Comment

well, one thing you (and most people) should learn from this site: a whole lot of gun shop owners don't know what they're talking about. I can't say that i blame them (too much). They have a lot to deal with: CA laws, Federal Laws, county laws, city laws. On top of all that, they have a business to run (which means keeping and maintaining inventory, product research, loss prevention, marketing, etc). They have a lot on their plate. It's a lot easier to play it safe and just say it's illegal. There's less hassle and less liability. Obviously, not all gun shop guys are like this, but i've seen a lot that are.Originally posted by tonyayoTo tell you the truth, I was going to search - but someone who worked at a gun shop told me bullet proof vests were illegal. A very important skill you will find is being able to look up the laws yourself. It's not as scary as you think. The laws are mostly online, and resources like the DOJ's website and google will help narrow it down.
(1)try this: go to http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html
(2)run a search of all topics for "body armor"
(3)the first link that comes up should be penal code section 12360-12370. click that
(4) a brief screening shows that first the penal code deals with certification and the like. But you get to Penal Code Section 12370, you'll notice some relevant law. It says that felons can't own body armor unless they get an exception. it also references Section 942 of Title 11 of the California Code of
Regulations. Let's look that up...
(5)a quick google search of "california code of regulations" brought me here: http://government.westlaw.com/linked....0&SP=CCR-1000
(6)we click on title 11, after a little clicking around, we find that section 942 is really Title 11, Division 1 (attorney general), Chapter 11 (police body armor), Article 1 (CERTIFICATION OF BULLETPROOF VESTS), section 942 (definitions)
(7) after reading this, we find that all this section really does is define what body armor is
With few exceptions, this is pretty much how you can lookup the laws for ANYTHING. It takes a little skill to find ways to push the legalese (bullet button mag locks, for instance), but it will usually give you straight forward answers for general questions. In this case, if it were illegal for joe blow the law-abiding citizen to own body armor, it would have said something to that effect by now. Instead, it just says only FELONS are restricted from owning body armor. I found all this info in the span of about 15 minutes, so imagine an hour of searching around.
This isn't to chew you out. But in this state, the laws are so confusing that relying on anyone but a lawyer to tell you what is/isn't legal is a bad move. That why, if you notice, we quote lots of penal code around here. I could say that purple salt shakers are illegal, and that means nothing. If i show you the penal code that says purple salt shakers are illegal, now what i say has some weight.
I think being able to search the laws is a vital skill for ALL gun owners in this state.Originally posted by Kestryllwe can not nor should not dismiss or discount my theory that in the dark of night you molest sea anemones by candlelight.Originally posted by TKMShow me on this 1st Amendment bobble-head doll where the mods touched you.Originally posted by Click BoomIt is clear from this thread that citadel grad was the gunman, and Oswald his patsy.Comment
