Target shooting and hunting are two different issues. To score well in highpower you need to shoot at least 1 moa and probably better. Both service rifle and match rifle use iron sights, but they are different. Palma shooters use iron aperture sights to 1000 yds.

A miss on paper will cost you points, but it won't gut shoot game. When hunting, you have a responsibility to only shoot within the range you are confident you can be accurate at (that is, be able to reliably hit the kill zone on your quarry, even if it moves), including any error contributions from wind, being out of breath, or 'buck fever". That is probably much less than what you might be able to do at the range when shooting at paper (with plenty of time to concentrate).

      Do you prefer:

      Iron Sights?

      Variable power scopes?

      Fixed power scopes?

      Red dots?
      1. Once the gun is zeroed I do pretty well with irons. I can't quite shoot up to my gun, but I am pretty close. My poor vision is my main handicap.

      2. Any range at which it is sportsmanlike to take game, which is about 300 yards or so, maybe a bit more, except under the most exceptional of circumstances necessitating a longer shot; irons are still good that far.

      3. I prefer irons. I don't shoot so well with scopes, although i do alright with intermediate/long eye relief optics, of which I prefer fixed power. Not a big fan of variable power or red dot sights.

I wouldn't feel comfortable shooting at a deer or pig past 150 yards, and with the 30-30 it starts dropping too much after that anyway
Back when I was 16, I took my dad's Enfield .303 to the range and shot in the black at 100 yards and thought I did pretty well. Yesterday I took the same gun and only got two rounds out of it then had a problem with the gun. Don't think it has been shot in 30 years. I don't think I hit paper, let alone the black yesterday. Scopes only for these eyes for now on.

I'll give you $100 if you can show up and put 9 out of 10 rounds into a head-sized target at 500yds with stock iron sights from a 20" non freefloat A2.
These will be the first 10 rounds of the day that you fire.
You can bring your own AR.
              I'll provide the 500yd range.

You're looking at what, a 8"-ish target? I know a couple guys that can do that fairly regularly at 300yds, but we usually get sighters.

The thing is, that when hunting, the first shot counts and after 200yds, you're going to have to estimate and compensate for windage and elevation. That's the hard part.

That was when I was in the Marines and during qual. I couldn't bet you on the head shots but I would hit that same target, easy with iron sights 80-90% of the time at 500 yards. Granted it's been a FEW years...

Where is your range at? I would love to go shooting and have some good times.

Nice! I might have to come up there and practice, then take your $100 . I live in the OC, so I'm about 1 hour away and I have a few friends that live up there.

No practice the day of your $100 attempt.
10 shots right out of the case, hit or miss.
9 have to hit to take my $100.
No spotting shots, the paper does not lie.
It will be on a B27 head, cut off at the shoulders.

Also, this is sling prone, just like the USMC.
20" AR, regular A2 handguards, no freefloat tube.

                              It's waiting for you...
