    IRON SIGHT ACCURACY (Rifle)

How accurate are YOU with Rifle Iron Sights?

In your opinion, what is the MAX distance Iron Sights should be used to take game?

    Do you prefer:

    Iron Sights?

    Variable power scopes?

    Fixed power scopes?

    Red dots?

My iron on my AR will shoot about 2-3 MOA
I prefer Halo sight Eotech 512 for my tactical weapons
I use Scopes for target shooting and hunting.

I was raised on iron sights. Most game was 100-150 yards. I have taken deer at 250 yds but it took a couple of rounds. Now as I get older my eyes are not the best so mostly scopes over 100 yds.

With my peep sights setup on my AR-15 in .204 Ruger. I find I can hit a typical apple at about 300 yards. Thats assuming perfect conditions. I have done this 3 times out of a 7 shot string. And thats the absolute best I can do.

My short bull barreled (16") A4 stocked AR15 in .223 is super accurate as well. This little machine has a small aperture flip style rear sight and a thin post up front.
I can hit onions and steel on command at a 100 yards standing up. On a perfect day. Much farther. On a bench 200 yards. Not every shot mind you. I am not all that.

Note: These particular ARs have 3-4 lb Timney triggers and are built with custom barrels. They have very good parts. And I use hand loads exclusively if I am trying to get tight groups.

Winchester white box can't hit apples at 300 yards with my iron sight setup and using my old eyes. Others probably can.

ALL of my ARs shoot much better than I.
I realized this when I saw my buddy who has 3 tours of sand sniping under his belt shoot my weapons. He shoots 1/2 minute of pube hair for a living. The man can do things with my weapons that I can only imagine doing. (It helps to be young with iron sights)

Thats my experience. Yours may be different.

          Cheers

I figured this would be an OK range to shoot medium sized game. Thanks for the reply...

My M-1A's and AR's all have iron sights only, match sights. I frequently shoot off the spotters on the target during matches (200 - 600 yards). That means the rounds are hitting pretty much the same spot as the last shot. To me, that is accurate enough.

On my tactical Remington 700, I have a Leupold Mark 4 scope. One of the AR M4 type, I have an EOtech. With my old eyes, I guess I have to start using scopes.

Man that is incredible. I used to be a lot better shot when I was younger, I need to get out more.

the only centerfire gun i have really shot with open sights is a winchester lever 30-30 and a Lee enfield .303 brit.
I wouldn't feel comfortable shooting at a deer or pig past 150 yards, and with the 30-30 it starts dropping too much after that anyway

MOA is a measure of angle.
                      MOA is distance independent.
                      1 moa is 1.047" per 100yds.
So figure he shoots at 100yds and is getting 2.1" to 3.14" groups.
At 300yds, the groups would be 6.3" to 9.4".

When I shot in the Marines a few years back, we shot 200, 300, and 500 yard with iron sights. After some practice I was able to make kill shots on our M-16's out at that distance.
Im just a doode, playin' a doode, disguised as another doode

I shot 245/250 for the qual at a 29 Palms range in December 1989. The instructors told me that was the reserve range record for the year. They took my chevrons in a hurry.

I had to get a new set of chevrons when I returned to my unit. That was shot with M16A2 with iron sights at the distance of 200, 300 and 500 meters, and it felt good.

One MOA with irons from prone with a sling. My hold is about 1/3 MOA, but getting the shot to break causes much larger groups for me. I prefer irons in competition, but a scope for hunting.
