    Inherited Rifles - Now What??

I inherited a couple of rifles once owned by my grandfather. My dad ended up with them, then my brother. All three men have since passed away. I have no idea who the registered owner is or even what state they're registered in. My grandfather lived in Missouri for a while, but spent most of his life, including last few decades, in California, where all the rest of us are/were from.

I will probably keep one of the guns, which is a Winchester model 1890 22 short from about 1914. The other one I'm considering selling, which is a 30-'06 Savage Super Sporter from the 40's.

Can anyone recommend a course of action so that I can ensure I am the legal owner and am in a position to sell one or both of them when I'm ready to do so?

    Any tips will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

It is a C&R rifle so you dont have to worry about registering it!

There is no "registration" of long guns in CA (except for AWs), so there is no "registered owner" to speak of.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

You are legal and ready to go on both rifles. Shoot them or sell them, fine either way.

Your only restrictions are to "not knowingly sell to a prohibited person" and any sales out of state need to go to a FFL, either a curio & relic license holder or gun dealer.

Within California, buyer hands you cash, you hand buyer rifle.
Useless laws weaken the necessary laws.

Thank you all for the helpful information.

Is there an online database of "prohibited persons" for the sale of firearms?

C&R's are great. What "big brother" doesn't know is a good thing too.

There isn't a list of prohibited persons. The best thing to do is to get a copy of the DL and a signed statement that they are not a felon, subject of a restraining order, or otherwise prohibited. That is due diligence, as well as noting if they are wearing a tin foil hat when you get the money from them. Get a camera and sell them on this forum. The people here are pretty reliable.

Yes, unless you actually get a C&R license, at which point you have to log your purchases and sales and keep the records for twenty years.

All the more reason NOT to have a C&R license in my books.

                          What?

I thought unregistered handguns are a big no-no when you are going to transfer it?

unregistered handguns are perfectly legal to own.... you just had to have it before 1991

and before you ask... no you don't have to prove you had it before 1991, they have to prove you didn't
