Look into ABC law. Passports do NOT have a physical description and are therefore not legal forms of ID to buy alcohol. BS, I agree, but when a liquor store or bar accepts a passport, they're are in violation.

Laws are broken all the time. Many places sell alcohol to you, even if you end up sharing it with a minor. They turn a blind eye to it more often than you'd think.

However, I thought passports did have a physical description? At the very least, they have a birthdate, no?

I'd venture to say that 9 of 10 alcohol serving establishments don't even know the law regarding passports NOR is it often enforced, if ever. Doesn't make it legal though. Kinda like "wonder if that guy on the street corner would sell me a handgun without doing any paperwork." Even if he does it, its still illegal for both parties.

Are we talking a U.S. or a foreign passport here? A lot of foreign passports actually DO have physical descriptions on them (EU ones do, for instance).

I've never had them ask for an ID once at Angeles.

Just curious. Is your friend's passport a US passport? If so, it is government identification issued by a government more solvent than DMV.

you would think so but i can't get into any of the bars around here with a US passport. My wife had her ID stolen and she decided to take her passport our to the bars...short trip, none of them would accept it. You can get in and out of the country with one, just not in and out of bars.

as for the ranges...never been to one that required id. kids can go shoot with adults...they dont have id.

That's simply because US passports don't include a physical description (height, hair color, eye color, etc.), and ABC regulation only recognizes as valid IDs those that include a physical description. The irony is that many foreign passports include descriptions (and tourists obviously don't have a state drivers license), so if you're a foreigner and showing your passport, you'll generally get into any bar. I've never had a visiting foreign friend getting rejected from a bar.

I should mention that the passport in question was not a U.S. passport and even though the photo there was from 10 years prior, there was no problem getting into most bars.

Ok so I called Angeles and Firing Line Burbank and this is the gist of it: Angeles does not require any ID aside from the person paying for it (if with card) and Firing Line is fine with a foreign passport.
