Flying to Laughlin .. How to get my CCW pistol there

O. K. Here's the problem ....

The wife and I are planing a Airline trip to Laughlin in early December
We will be there for 4 days / Sightseeing , Gaming , Going to Oatman , Being Bums....

I have a current Nevada CCW
Usually we drive across the desert to Vegas or Laughlin / No Problem / . But We just recived a Great offer WITH airfare included.....................

How do I legally and safely get my favorite CCW pistol to Laughlin ??

This is a first for me , so I need a little advice

As far as I know, you can just check it through with your baggage.

You'll have to tell the agent it's in there and they will probably want to check to make sure it's unloaded, but that's about it.

Also what about my ammo ??

Can I bring some boxed in my baggage or do I have to go over to Bullhead City to get rounds ??

check with your airline. Most will alllow some ammo to be shipped, up to 11 pounds IIRC. Some require it to be boxed in the original factory boxes.

Depending on the airline, read up on their policy regarding bringing guns and ammo.

Put your unloaded CCW pistol in a single case with a lock. TSA approved locked gun cases are highly recommended such as SKB. Place into luggage. Put box of ammo in separate area in luggage.

Once at the airport and picking up tickets; tell airline teller that you've come to declare an unloaded firearm in your luggage. Teller will ask you to open the case to inspect and confirm it's unloaded. Will also ask if you have ammo, have them inspect it. They will give you a firearm ticket to sign, request a copy if possible. Lock case and get your key back.

My handguns and long guns have logged quite a few miles in the sky. They all travel in various Pelican cases. There is a ton of info about flying with guns on this site. I will reiterate a few key points.

-Do not use a TSA lock
-Do not let a airline rep or TSA agent have a key to your locked case.
-No one is allowed to open your case with out you present.
-At the ticket counter ask the ticket agent, what happens if your not at the baggage claim carousel, upon landing (missed flight etc.) Most airlines will take large cases and secure them in their baggage office.

Never flown with ammo, so I dont know the rules.

On a side note, as airlines are hurting for cash they have charged for checked bags and especially over sized bags. I flew with my Pelican 1750 (50.50" x 13.50" x 5.25" ) and Southwest carried it for free!

Don't over worry air travel with handguns.

1. Use a locking case that fits inside a piece of luggage you check. That way it doesn't scream "gun, steal me!" to the ground crew.

2. Put your ammo in original packaging or on some airlines any sort of container that makes sure nothing can strike the primers. On Southwest, I just place loaded magazines in magazine holsters that are fully covered.

Relax and enjoy your rights in free America. I was amused walking out of SeaTac in front of a TSA guy with a Sig on my back...

So... when you walk up to the ticket counter you open the luggage, retrieve the case and then go through the motions? (not over-worrying, just never done it but might soon as well) Do you (personally) normally then use hard-sided luggage?

Can the ammo be in the same piece of checked luggage (separated) as the locked case, or does the ammo need to go in a 2nd piece of gear that's checked?

From what I recall, a hard case must be used at some point. There are 2 options:
A) Hard pistol case inside soft luggage, or
2) Soft pistol case (lockable) inside hard-sided luggage.

Soft pistol case inside soft luggage is a no-go.

Different airlines might have different rules, so it's best to check the website of the airline you are using for the best info. Make sure to print out any info you find, in case there is a misunderstanding at the counter. Also, it would be wise o have TSA regs as well, in case the carrier's regs don't specifiy something, but the federal regs do.

Ammo and the gun can be in the same piece of checked luggage, but should be in different containers.

I would never trust a gun in a soft case on an airplane, too much risk of damage.

I have an old SKB case that I use for pistols and a Pelican rifle case. For the SKB I ship it inside of a soft sided bag that is a pretty close fit. It looks like any other bag. The Pelican case I ship in an unmarked cardboard box that it was shipped to me in. It's pretty beat up now and covered with tape but it makes the case look a lot less like a rifle case.
