Why do you call it a weapon?

I call it a weapon because it was drilled into me by my drill sgt's. The general public tends to call everything a gun. I will never be able to get rid of the "cringe" everytime I hear someone call an M16/AR15 a gun. I have done way to many push ups to ever call a weapon a gun again.

Yes. And so is an Olympic shotgun, and Olympic bow and an Olympic foil.

They are just weapons that are being used in non-violent competition.

But an Olympic weapon is never designed as a weapon, only as a marksmanship tool. Unless, simply being a gun makes it a weapon.

Bolts, levers, revolvers, Desert Eagles...can all be named as recreational and simply "guns"
A tactical 12 gauge...is a weapon. Not ideal for clays, hunting, or target practice...
An AK type is no target shooter...
Some guns are made more specifically than others. And it is our American Right to own them as weapons as long as we remain responsible owners. But don't shy away from the term "weapon." Call it like it is because the anti's will undoubtedly win that argument if you create it.

Agreed. Although guns suitable for hunting would also be considered weapons in my book. The only guns I wouldn't call "weapons" would be Olympic/target guns.

I have no problem with calling guns 'weapons' - especially a rifle. Here is my reasoning, and it isn't just because this is what my Drill Instructors taught me...
A rifle is a rifle until it runs out of ammo. Then, if bayonet is affixed, it is a knife with a long handle. It is also a club, as buttstokes can be very effective. For all of these reasons, the rifles' multi-tasking capabilities if you will, it is a weapon.

Pistols can also fit better into the 'weapon' category. It can be used to pistol whip. It's a heavy piece of metal (save the plastic guns) and therefore is not just a pistol, it is a weapon.

I do not use the term weapon. I call my tools by their proper names:
1. Firearm
2. Rifle
3. Shotgun
4. Pistol

I find it strange that someone calling himself "Capt Speirs" would have to ask this question.

I describe firearms by their type (Pistol, Revolver, Rifle, Shotgun, etc.) or catagory (NFA) and use the term "weapon" to describe a firearm used as such in a specific instance.
