This area is in Bear Valley, Mariposa County, California. Named for the Bear Flag revolt because it's instigator and first Senator of California John C. Fremont (first candidate of the Republican party for President and first to run opposed to slavery) owned much of the land in those days.

I'm familiar with the area. I did work at the observatory. It's a dry grass wasteland with almost no trees and a terrible wind.
