    too loud!

took the gf to the range today, took the rifle safety class, grabbed a bite to eat, and then came back for some range time. all was going well, gf was putting together pretty decent groupings with a 9mm carbine, and i was having a good time with the mosin 91/30 i just got.

that was, until someone began using the lane next to us, WITH .300 WINCHESTER MAGNUMS. did i mention this is a 25 yard indoor range?

I have no idea why the rent this at my range, not sure the exact model but it was a black bolt action with a fairly large scope, and a muzzle break reminiscent of a .50BMG. every round the guy let off sent a shockwave that actually visibly moved the dividers. everyone at the range had a look that was some variation of WTF. my ear protection still left me with a loud ringing after every shot he took.

what do you guys do when something like this happens? it really kinda spoiled the rest of our range time

I thought that center fire rifles were usually a faux-pas at indoor ranges.

I giggle and laugh because someone out there is expressing their 2nd amendment rights with a bang!

You could always put some earmuffs over your earplugs. double up on ear protection.

Did it also give you that kicked in the chest sensation every time it fired? I love that!

Probably not. The only muzzle-braked gun I have stood next to was a 22-250 at an outdoor range. I can see how a .300 Win Mag in an indoor range would ruin your session rather quickly.

2nd amendment rights are great, but it just seems like if you're gonna shoot a 300 magnum with a scope, you'd be better off going outdoors.

regarding earmuffs - i did! still ringing. i figured my 7.62x54r was pretty much as loud as you wanna bring to a small indoor range, but this is a gun they actually rent there WHY OH WHY. and everything gives you the chest feeling on the rifle side, but this was a full on blast wave! it moved the dividers!

depends on the range. Some indoor ranges are rated for rifle fire.

yeah they said the backstop is rated for up to 50bmg, but the ceiling isnt so they only allow up to .487 i think.

as mentioned in the OP, i took my girlfriend to the rifle safety class in the morning before our session there.

Haha, I've never seen anybody shoot a scoped rifle in an indoor range.

I worked at a range where we allowed anything up to 50BMG. It was only a 50ft range but, it was nice when I needed to test a trigger or whatever on my 50s. I could at least function test the gun before driving ten hours to a match. So, there are acceptable reasons to fire large rifles at close ranges but, if they are renting it out. They are just doing it so that guys with small pen!ses can pay them money to fire their little toy rifle. I just can't get over how little and fragile the AR30 looks to me. If you've ever been around a bunch of AR50s you'ld know what I mean.

I dont see how it could be fun to shoot a long range rifle at 25 yards. I can throw rocks at the target and get good groups at that range.

.300 @ 25 yards indoors? Ridiculous. The guy was an attention hound wanting everyone to look at him to feed his ego. Don't tell me, he had a ginormous scope too.

So, when I've shot one of my 50s at a 50' indoor range, I was on an ego trip. No, I was testing something before driving 10 hours to a match. BTW, I have a NXS 8-32 on one of the 50s I've shot indoors. There can be valid reasons to shoot big guns at short distances. But, you'll need to open your mind a little and not jump to conclusions. In the OPs case, I believe that it was a rental and you are on the right tract but, don't always assume you know why something is being done.
