#71/2 general purpose, ~$21.00 for 100, that will get you the feel of the gun.

Since you will be using it for HD, the #71/2 will make less of a mess of your house should you ever actually have to use it. It will get the job done and you can then just paint over the small holes.

00 buck is the near equivalent of 9 .38 caliber slugs, so you will be patching a lot of stuff if you have a HD scenario.

I wouldn't put #7 in my HD gun but that's me - mine is loaded with 00.

Do a search here for more opinions on this.

There are any number of threads on "which shot size in an HD gun". Search should pull them up, one as recent as last week.

For the OP... field loads, with "low base", or shorter if you will, brass will be a bit milder for practice purposes / getting to know the gun. The WalMart 100 round pack of Federal or Winchester game loads would be a best bet for that.

True defensive rounds, slugs and buckshot, will have a "high base", or taller, brass component to the shell. Some game loads, such as turkey loads, will as well. The visible difference between low base and high base is quite obvious even to someone new to shotguns. High base shells are going to have a much stronger recoil and the do take some getting used to.

The size of the shot will usually be shown as a number on the outside of each shell.

Good luck with your new toy.

I would say wally for the cheapest prices. I just saw 15 packs of Winchester slug and buckshot for 8$. 100 shell 7 1/2 or 8 shot for 21$ for skeet or upland game. Either way Wally is your best bet for ammo if you want it right now on the spot.

I don't want to start a selling ammo jack thread case. On the other hand every one who wants to buy ammo uses wally prices or lower to price what they want to buy ammo for. I buy ammo there. I only trade ammo rarely if ever sell.

I love to order ammunition from Cabelas. You can find solid deals and there is something about receiving ammunition in the mail that is just fun...maybe I'm odd.

They aren't "local" but you can look around and order from the comfort of your home...which is local enough for me!

I'm a big proponent for ammo at Wal-Mart, if we're talking local. 20 bucks will get you a hundred rounds of bird/lead in #7, #7.5 or #8 shot (depends what they have). That's about bar-none lowest anywhere, online or off. Never seen it lower. Their buckshot and slugs are only marginally cheaper if not about the same price. They typically come in 5 rounds per box, but you will save money if you can find "value packs" of 15+ rounds/box.

Online I find that OMBEx Police Supply has the best prices on shotgun ammo. And yes, they will deal with civilians. http://www.ombexpress.com/

100% agree. 00 buck is a great HD round. Know your backstop, where you other family members are, neighbors, etc. #7 is minimally effective against bad folks, gruesome wounds, but little penetration. You want to end the threat, and 00 buck does that quite well. Avoid all the "fancy" rounds, like flame throwers, rubber pellets, etc. Get a few hundred rounds of #7 and get to know your new gun!
