Also, obviously I am going to assume there will be cheap brands and expensive brands of the SAME exact shotgun shell. Any reason to not pick the cheaper one? What difference could it make... Thanks again

Walmart is the best place to buy any ammo thats if they have it at the time! Lot of people buy there only to resell at higher prices.

Damn man I just called both walmarts in san jose. They dont carry shotgun ammo I'd have to drive to gilroy or mountian view.

Any SJ'ers know a good place to buy cheap ammo? Big 5 put me on hold for 20 minutes so I hung up :/

There's another walmart in Milpitas ( off 680 and 237) that has shotgun ammo - their current special is $20.97 per box of 100 shells, but that is # 8 or 7 1/2 shot .. Its good for breaking clay birds at the range or maybe hunting small birds .. They also had 00 buckshot and slugs, but i don't remeber the prices.
Another place is Mel Cotton's and they are in downtown SJ - http://www.melcottons.com/. They should have all you need and be able to answer questions.

Thanks I'll call up mel cottons.... ANyone have a suggestion for ammo type... I.e What is #8 shotgun ammo... The shotgun will only be used in home defense situations and using it at the range, so i'ld prob buy the ammo that I would use in a HD situation

              Just looked this up

              000 Buck - 8 lead pellets (0.36")
              00 Buck - 9 lead pellets (0.33")
              0 Buck - 12 lead pellets (0.32")
              1 Buck - 16 lead pellets (0.30")
              4 Buck - 27 lead pellets (0.24")
QB 8 - 8 pellets (Armor Piercing) - Quadrangle Buck is made from a steel cylinder cut into two layers of four pie-shaped pieces per layer. The numerous sharp edges gives excellent penetration; however, the light weight and poor ballistic shape limits its effective range.
Flechettes - 32 flechettes (Armor Piercing) - Flechettes are essentially small steel nails with tiny fins swaged into the rear.
Slug - Slugs will pretty well flatten any target, armored or not; however, the issue of over penetration will determine whether you want to take the solid or the hollow-point slug.
Slug HP - Hollow-point slugs. Less penetration than regular slugs.
Baton - Rubber batons. Used for training.

Is the 000 What you were referring to as # 8 ammo?

                - not sure if this is a good deal or not, As another poster mentioned WALMART has 100 for 20 bucks but I'd prob lose money on the drive

#8 is a general purpose game/target shot. Walmart Milpitas and elswhere carry this in 100 rnd bulk packs for $21, which is 21 cents per shell, so $6.99 per 25 is bit higher but close enough.

I have not located 00 buck at the Milpitas Walmart, but it was available at Tracy for $5.49 per 5, rather costly. For 00 buck seek out deals at Cabela's, which has the best prices #1, #2 it is available, and #3, you can find deals where the shipping is free.

Slugs are available at Walmart unless sold out. Milpitas had some four weeks ago but I bought all five boxes These would be 23/4 Winchester brand, box of 5 for $3.17 a box. They also carry Federal slugs in 10 packs.

Big 5 caries the same thing, though the price is twice that of Walmart.

3" mag shells will be more costly, but have more power. I have not yet tried these.

You can try the walmart in milpitas. Also, if you are willing to drive to Daly City and brave the crowds, go to the gun show. I heard there's one at the Cow Palace soon.

THanks for all the helpful information guys. Cant wait to start shooting. Also, what kind of ammo is usually accepted at the shooting range? The #8? And they let you shoot at paper targets, correct? Its a 18.5" HD shotgun.

Congrats on the new SG, your shoulder will hate you for it. Try shooting slugs off sand bags at the range - it hurts.

Unless there is a specific location where you can blast shot, they may limit you to rifled slugs for a smooth bore. Last I new (years ago) Los Altos had a plinking range and folks used to blast shot at different things. I took my SG to the Livermore range and used slugs, 00, and #8 shells at 25 yd targets and was never questioned.

Shooting paper at the range is marginal in terms of fun and only for a few shots as it gets dry. Shooting at cans and other items out on BLM or the NF is by far more interesting.

In reference to "000," "#8,", etc.

The list you looked up tells about the different "sizes" of shotgun ammo. The higher the number (as in #9 shot vs. #1 shot), the smaller the pellet, so there are more pellets in each shell.

000 - Called "triple ought" buckshot (not zero-zero-zero, you will get laughed at ), means each pellet is 0.36" in diameter, and there are 8 pellets per shell.
00 - "Double ought" buck (most typical for home defense ammo), has 9 pellets, each with a 0.33" diameter.
                            .
                            .
                            .
                            #4 - 27 pellets with ).27" diameter
                            etc, etc

When the previous poster said #8 or #7 1/2 shot, that is not the same as 000.

Smaller pellets are good for bird hunting, or breaking clays, as the shot pettern tends to be "fuller," as in there are more pellets in the same diameter circle, but each pellet is smaller, and thus will do less damage individually. Bigger pellets are better for larger game or home defense, as they transfer more energy per pellet, but fewer pellets means less coverage.
                            This is my sig line.
