So last night I was perusing the NRA website considering joining. I know there is alot of members here that belong to the NRA. I'm going to be totally honest about my hesitation. Back when they were trying to register assault weapons there were a bunch of owners fighting to not have them registered. For the reasons of in case they were made illegal why would you want to tell the government what you have. So they can show up to your house with a better chance of them taking it. If you remember the issue was before they were dros'ed but the papper work was kept 30 days then trashed, not kept. DOJ didnt keep the records. Now during this time I was against registration. Reason being I felt you give Dem's an inch they will take a mile.To me there like mice nibbling at a piece of cheese when it comes to taking away our gun rights. They just cant get enough till its all gone.So when the NRA took a stance of OK lets register them. I was shocked and outraged. I could'nt beleave it. If I remember correctly the Dems were suppose to back of gun legislation with the NRA endorsment of registration. Well that did'nt work out. So I guess my question is whats changed and is it really worth joining? Will they make the same mistake again? Please lets keep comments civil. I am not anti NRA , Obviously if I am considering joining. I just want feed back from members that went through this back in the day and can say why its a good idea to be a member now. Thank you! P.S if I remebered what happened wrong please educate me with proof not just opinion.

The NRA is, by far, the largest pro-2nd Amendment rights group/lobby. You might not agree with every single thing they do, or stance they take, but if you're a gun owner or you just support the 2nd Amendment...you should join the NRA.sigpic
Vote for pro-gun candidates, or lose your rights, and the rights of future generations. That's it. The end.

I haven't seen anyone get too incensed about joining the NRA on this forum. I complained about their junk mail once in an ongoing thread but was promptly pointed to the solution to get the mail to stop. I think you'll find that just about anyone that comes into this thread will suggest you join.01001100 01100101 01100001 01110010 01101110 00100000 01110100 01101111 00100000 01110011 01110111 01101001 01101101 00100000 01001001 00100111 01101100 01101100 00100000 01110011 01100101 01100101 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01100100 01101111 01110111 01101110 00100000 01101001 01101110 00100000 01100001 01110010 01101001 01111010 01101111 01101110 01100001 00100000 01100010 01100001 01111001 00101110

Join them all.
None are legislators, they can only lobby and cojole against Congress and the Senate to keep away from our guns.
When people decry that the NRA did nothing for "me", they fail to consider that whatever legislation passed has been considerably watered down, thanks to the efforts of the NRA.
Without the NRA (GOA, CRPA), gun control would be absolute by now, and the 2nd Amendment a footnote in history.
The NRA is us. As a member, you should write, call, Email your representatives at all times to voice your opinions and wants when it comes to your Constitutional Rights. Too many "members" join, put the sticker on their car, and sit back and do nothing......then ***** and moan when an anti-gun law passes; "Where was the NRA?"
Indeed, where were you?"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......CiceroComment

And aside from *****ing about the NRA, exactly what is it that they do? I think people should join other 2A orgs, but the NRA is the 800 pound gorilla.Originally posted by Comp^2Check out GOA (Gun Owners of America). Sure they don't have the name recognition the NRA does, but you might be happier with what they actually do with their members' money.Comment

What the NRA did was, in pre-Heller climate (RKBA officially considered a communal, and not an individual right, etc.) they fought the losing battle to ensure the battle doesn't get lost quickly, and that when/if the time comes for the tide to turn, there're still gun owners out there. They did so through lobbying, rallying people, pushing or fighting legislature, and promoting the gun culture. To do so they often had to compromise (different climate, remember?). I daresay that if it wasn't for the NRA, Heller, even if it did come, would've been moot, for there'd be no gun culture to back it.
NRA's strength is in its membership (as that's where the money and numbers they can show/use as a hammer comes from) and its know-how. If you can contribute to either one, you should.
What bothers me is that so many gun owners are NOT NRA members for reasons ranging from not liking LaPierre's tie to receiving too much junk mail to disagreeing with some of what NRA does. The first two reasons are ridiculous, of course, and I only used them to illustrate some of the reasons I've heard over the years. As for the last one, NRA is a single-purpose organization. One may disagree with how they go about it, but they have a proven track record of success. So unless one intends to fight it the "right way" himself, I don't see how this is a valid excuse for not joining the NRA.
And of course, joining the NRA isn't mutually exclusive with joining the other RKBA organizations. But as Dr Rockso said, NRA IS the 800-poind gorilla, and it should be the first organization one joins. We can save minor disagreements and bickering for when our rights aren't under threat as they are now. If that's not agreeable, ask me what my grandfather told me about how his better-trained side consisting of professional officers and soldiers lost the civil war in Russia by being divided.Last edited by nick; 09-10-2009, 3:30 PM.DiaHero Foundation - helping people manage diabetes. You won't agree with anyone 100% of the time. That's just life. You have to keep your eye on the bigger picture.
NRA is the most effective organization out there supporting gun owners' rights. If you think the right of law abiding citizens to own and use firearms should be protected, then you should be a member of the NRA.Comment

I'm not a super active member but I always pay my dues and will continue to. They are fighting on our behalf. Only thing that annoys me is when I make a donation and I get another solicitation a week later, it reminds me of a super aggressive pan handler that I used to see on Market St. in SF. Show some tact and space them out at least...NRA Lifetime member

Unfortunately that seems to be the MO of just about every organization out there that asks for donations. It makes you sorry you donated anything. Honestly, I think they lose more donors than they retain with those incessant aggressive spam/junk mail solicitations. It should be an unwritten rule that once you donate to a cause they will cease asking for money for at least 6 months.I'm not a super active member but I always pay my dues and will continue to.
