I've had semi auto's run away on me before from a stuck firing pin.... it was surprising to say the least.
anyway, there are numerous documented cases of stuck firing pins causing a shotgun to discharge when closing the breach. (I've had it happen myself on an OU shotgun that had gotten dirty)
Perhaps cycling through the action isn't necessarily 'unsafe' but removing the shells without running them through the action is definitely more safe.
You won't know if you broke your firing pin until it jams and blows a hole in whatever your pointed at.
