Broke my shoulder - when should I shoot again?

I broke my left shoulder & collar bone about 5 weeks ago. I wore a sling for 4 weeks and didn't use my arm at all. I got the sling off last week and I've begun doing things around the house, but I still can't lift anything - the muscles of my arm and shoulder have atrophied quite a bit (going through physical therapy right now.)

Anyone else have an injury like this? How soon did you start shooting again? A rifle on a bench would probably be ok.

      What does your doctor say?

You can't use your arm at all?

Like the good Dr said, better get good at weak hand shooting.
You can't use the arm you can't fight, but you can shoot with practice.

The smart, learn from their own mistakes.
The others, well......they just never learn.

Let it heal 95.9% and start shooting.

Listen to your Doctor. Dr. Rockso.

Practice your off hand shooting until your other doctor tells you otherwise.

I agree, don't push it and injure it again. Broken collar bones are nasty, especially if you like to long guns. Makes using the can very interesting.

Basically, do what the others are saying, let the doctor make that decision. This is a good excuse to practice one handed cocking, reloads, failure drills, etc.

After I had my shoulder replaced I was in a sling for 6 weeks. Two weeks after that I started shooting my 16 ga 50 rounds at a time. I had to use a folded towel as a recoil absorber for the first month.

                      When it doesn't hurt!

Seriously, when your doctor says you can start with some therapy (shooting too) go for it. I have busted both of my collar bones riding MX and after 3 to 4 weeks I was doing most things (some painfully)

Leave the .458 Rigby in the safe and start with small caliber guns first.

I have been doing therapy for about a week - I guess I'll hit the range today!

                              There you go!

If it bugs you back off and give it a rest. I don't think you can hurt anything. You just need to get things moving and that's going to hurt for a while.

                              Good luck!
