Ammo Storage...What's the best way?

It seems like you might want to lock it up, but if you put it in a tightly sealed container (like a safe, mine has water seals) and there's a fire, isn't that just a big bomb? Can I say bomb here? I probably just got my name on the watch list....back to the issue at hand....

What's a safe way to store ammo reasonably. Someone here probably has a specially constructed containment system in the basement complete with laser intrusion detection, fire suppression, and blow off doors...but for the rest of us, what? A locking metal cabinet made of of thin sheet metal maybe with ventilation louvers? I need to figure something out, the bottom drawer of my roll away tool box is full of ammo and I have more I need to store, plus it'd be nice to just put tools in the tool box (maybe one gun....)

1. My match rifle ammo, or anything match items (primers, powder) are stored in ammo cans and stored in my closet, cool and dark place.

2. Regular plinking ammo is stored in my garage shelf in its original cardboard cases.

I store my ammo in a plastic 5 gal bucket with Gamma Seal lid.

It is water/air tight as far as I can tell.

I buy bucket from Home Depot for about $3, lid was around $7.

Lockable explosion proof steel lockers with double doors.

Contact your local paint company or automotive auto paint supplier. They will have knowledge of where you can get these used. A little paint and clean up on a used one and it is a good as one that would cost $600 new.

They are not completely fire proof but it has to be a very hot and long burning at high heat to be a problem. I have seen a paint store burn down with gallon containers of thinners and other solvents remained untouched inside some of these.

Well worth it if you can find them around $250 each

I got my flammables cabinet for free.

It locks and it's fire resistant. It can get a little warm in the garage but it's always dry. It's the best I can do right now and I think it does pretty well.

Before I got my cabinet it was all in cans, boxes and battle packs in my closet. A bit cooler and just as dry but not exactly fire resistant. I don't think there is much explosion risk but that cabinet might be the difference between saving my ammo in a fire and having to buy up another stockpile.

How much ammo? I store mine in a Pelican roller case with a desiccant. Air tight and water proof. Nice for bugging out as you can roll it to the car if needed. Although I don't really have that much ammo. Still plenty heavy.

The airtight part of the Pelican case is part of the problem, makes a good strong bomb case.......plus plastic is a great fuel once vaporized. Convenient, great for bugging out, but not so good in a fire......ever seen plastic burn? Spaceship One uses vaporized plastic and NO2 as rocket fuel.....

Ammo Cans, ammo cans, and more ammo cans. I was actually thinking on coverting some tool boxes into larger ammo cans as well. Ammo on the bottom of the box, and range tools on the removable shelf!

I like ammo cans, but most of my ammo is stored in the original container (cardboard box with foam or plastic insert to hold rounds). half is kept on climate controlled closet shelf, half is non-climate controlled garage shelf. I expect either will be OK when it's needed. I would like to find a better way to store it, but so far this is all that is practical.

How about paint cans. You can buy empty new 1 gal metal cans at paint store.
It's resealable and liquid tight.
