I have been wondering, is it possible to ship a rifle to another state, like if you were going to go visit family and didn't want to go through the hassle of flying with it. Could you just mail it to your family and have it waiting for you, or would you have to ship it to a nearby ffl? Anyone know what you'd have to do to make this happen?sigpicComment

You can ship a firearm to yourself (for example if you're visiting family/friends or going to a match) without having to go through an FFL.
Long guns can go USPS, UPS or FedEx.
Handguns UPS or FedEx only.
Each of the carriers has their own restrictions posted on their web sites. Do your homework and you'll be fine.Comment

Time to apply for your own FFL.

There are a few gun shops in Red Bluff. Have you tried checking with them?

It's not a new law. It has been on the books since the 30s, but now the BOE has clarified it as it pertains to FFL dealers. The DEALER is responsible for PAYING the sales tax on firearms bought from dealers out of state. The CA dealer will collect the sales tax from you to cover the cost....
Also...here is a REALLY screwy one...feel free to call them and ask about it....one shop told me there is a new law in place in CA. where they have to collect SALES TAX on ANYTHING...guns,ammo,baseball,socks,etc. coming into CA. !?!?! WTF??? I was like what? So laughing I said...ok...I will have the guy write me a bill of sale for $5.00. They told me I needed the ORIGINAL receipt and I would be taxed on that!?!?
I have a feeling they are going to loose some business over that.
Take care,Stan

As has been stated, those FFLs are morons. Or they simply want to run a racket and help their other FFL buddies out across the country so they can have some poor idiot pay more money to their FFL to ship a gun to a CA FFL. Stupid as hell.
Especially since if a private party sends me a firearm, I do not have to collect sales tax as it is not a retail sale and I do not have to maintain a CFLC approval number for three years.
For me personally, it is a no brainer to take non-FFL shipments.
Now onto sales tax. The BOE really has dealers bent over. If we receive anything from a retailer, it is considered a retail sale. So if you order a gun and some magazines, we are considered the retailer and must collect the sales tax.
Now here is the stupid thing. If your buddy out of state sells you something in an occassional sale, but he ships it through another FFL, then as far as I am concerned that is coming from a retailer and subject to sales tax. Used or not!
Unless, your buddy made up a receipt and specifically stated due to the draconian measures of the local douche bag FFLs, the sale is an occassional sale and not subject to sales tax. And I would literally use those terms.
The main thing is I need to cover my rear from the tax man should he ever come. So a receipt from your buddy saying he was forced to ship it through an douche bag FFL and this is indeed an occassional sale would be good enough for me. I will let the BOE verify the validity of that statement.
Be sure to use douche bag in describing the FFL though. That would be funny as heck.www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018. I now own Westside Arms.Comment
