Doesn't seem all effective if he was a 'world-class track star' after being hit in the 'leg'.

Yes, but they probably require you FIRST get a BSIS "guard card".I was at Loyal Arms in Folsom to pick up a rifle. They had expandable batons for sale and said they had been selling quite a few.
I have never been trained to use any kind of baton. Is training for civilians available? Without training I do not see any reason to buy a baton.
TBH, might as well go for the whole package of GC, pepper spray (legal for small size in CA for anyone BUT if you are a Guard (at work) you need cert class to carry/use), maybe handcuff class and last but not least Exposed Firearm Permit. Getting GC and EFP in package deal will be big discount and save an FBI Live Scan fee. Takes at least a month or so after taking classes to get Permits from CA BSIS, so might be nice to have in place BEFORE Boogaloo pops off and Guard companies are "deputizing" everyone with a EFP to be "on patrol".
I got all the permits but I just don't see myself ever using a baton as a guard.
Spray maybe, gun maybe, but I'm not going to voluntary go around beating people (for legal reasons
).
Seem not just dumb but "CA dumb" that batons were restricted. Pretty sure the whole point of requiring cops to only use certain batons were they are designed to "work" but also REDUCE likelyhood of other serious injury or death. Do they want civilians using hatchets instead?
Main use of baton for cops is to deliver "stingers" to lower legs of powerful men they otherwise can't bring down when drunk and fighting. I know two guys brought down that way after tossing several cops around "like rag dolls".
Personally, I might use a walking cane with big hook on the end to not just swing like baton but grab someone's arms, legs or even neck and pull/push them off balance.
Even without the pig sticker feature, this could be a way to go IMO. Antifa makes pretty good use of umbrellas in a variety of ways. AFAIK it would be fully legal to have a sharp tip that isn't concealed "hiding in plain sight", or maybe with rubber cap but not sure. Just be mindful on fine hardwood flooring.Comment

I wanted a baton "because cool & finally legal" rather than functional/rational, but $200+ is an expensive novelty, so I gave it up until I saw a pew-pew review for a "Best-bang-for-the-buck" 21" expandable.
Best Defense Batons
$24.99 for a 21" baton! Taiwanese made, good reviews, no tax, cheap shipping, count me in. But no ship to California, so I emailed customer service, who replied thus:
" . . .Unfortunately, as of right now, we are not shipping batons to California. While the California baton rules were overturned there due to a recent court case there is still time for this decision to be challenged meaning that we are currently in a grey area until the law is fully overturned. While we would love to begin providing our California customers with this new option to protect themselves there is still a chance we can be held liable or be punished by the law for shipping them there. . . "
I made my case, citing freedom week and the recent ammo direct-ship, and received this email yesterday:
"Hi,
We are now selling and shipping batons to California."
So as of last night, this is on its way to me:
21" collapsible steel baton
P.S. the "Streetwise" model is $22.95, but I suspect it's made in China, and I prefer the all-black.Comment

The ones that know better all carry a straight stick.Damn right, I want ALL the gadgets I can get my hands on. If you'd tell me it was now legal in CA to own and buy explosive devices, don't be surprised if you see me asking about the best way to conceal carry an M67 grenade
Don't most LEO'S carry the collapsible ASP batons? I can't remember the last time I saw a cop walking around with one of those old timey T-shape wooden or metal nightsticks
Some carry the PR-24 type.
Those that carry the ASP probably haven't had to use it much. Those that do usually end up getting a straight stick later.
Lots of videos on youtube of cops not doing well with the ASP. Its really just not an effective tool.Comment

21" steel collapsible baton arrived today, and I'd be pleased at twice the price. $24.99 is laughable. I actually bought two for the free shipping and bonus OC spray. Don't know if I can risk giving my wife one of 'em *joke* (I hope it's a joke - might have to tone down the dad humor to avoid injury).
Slim & discreet, but stout, rugged, nice feel, deploys easily. I had expected the extended tubes to be susceptible to kinking or bending, but it's much stronger and stiffer than I'd imagined.
Collapsing requires a strong vertical strike on a hard material (wouldn't work against a hard rubber outdoor mat on a concrete surface, but readily collapsed on the concrete, itself), so I think this would deliver a debilitating poke (e.g. solar plexus) without collapsing.
Between contact sports, downhill road bike wipeouts, ski mishaps (blacked out somersaulting into a tree once), falling out of trees, roofs, and ladders, and endless other dumb***** foolishness, I feel like I'm pretty tolerant to physical insult, but I gave myself just a gentle test tap both on a joint (side of knee - yeah, that smarts) and thick muscle (thigh), and I see this as a fabulous non-lethal persuasive device for any kind of fauna that I'm apt to encounter.
Frankly, it's also just super cool and fun.Comment

I just ordered two. I trained with the PR24 and did Kali Escrima for a couple of years, as well as Tonfa when I did martial art weapons previously. I think I prefer the straight stick. And with collapsibility it is a discreet carry.RKBA Clock: soap box, ballot box, jury box, cartridge box (Say When!)
