For me it's a function of how many rounds I shoot each time of that caliber, plus how many firearms I have in that caliber. I'll shoot a lot more rounds of .22 LR or 9X19 in a range trip than I will of something like .556 or .357 or .45 ACP.
The number of firearms in a caliber varies from 1 to 7.

The answer then is from 2000 to 25000 rounds.

Most go with 1k round per gun. If you have 2+ 9mm, you probably want 2k on hand, etc.

Some ammo is range / practice ammo, and the hot Plus P stuff (JHP, wadcutters, etc.) are for your home protection magazine.

In the grand scheme of things, one should have as much ammo os they can afford, but it's rarely enough. If you have a lot of ammo, you should be out shooting a lot and I have problems in the 2024 economy finding the time to shoot very often as I scramble for enough work to keep the wolves at bay. Generally, the more ammo you can afford to own the better. Ammo never gets cheaper unless you examine insane times like the Pandemic, prices have came down from the highs of the Pandemic but discounting anomalies like that, ammo just becomes more and more expensive each year and we live in a state that is penalizing us financially to obtain more.

I guess only on CGN do we debate whether we have wants, needs, desires, duties, time, skill set or whatever to determine our allowable or transportable or responsible or reasonable or financial or SHTF / Apocalypse ready or time/place dependent or boating accident depleted stocks of ammunition for varying degrees of current local, national, global events in dynamic daily flux.

Is that enough complex variables to come up with the Unified Field Theory of ammo storage Holy Grail ---> Is it enough ?

I opine and submit that the general fall back position of --> You never have enough works....where that point is only you know.

As an aside I picked up ONE box of ammo just because. Hint: 13K ft/lbs. Don't own the platform, but if the opportunity arises... BYOA.

It does actually. Ammo (and overall gun-related) price is a heavily dictated by the political environment. I bought 9mm at 40cpr back in 2013, yet I stashed the same 9mm at 8cpr in 2018. Just align it with the White House renter at those times

In reserve I like to have:
Handgun 500 per each gun in that caliber.
Rifle 1000 per gun in each caliber.

This is where I'm at. For both handgun and rifle, I like to always have 1,000 of each caliber in stock at all times; but, I'll go down 500 at the very lowest. After that, I get nervous. I just like to have that ammo in reserve and any amounts above that is shootable.

Per Coivd we were able to buy ammo at a decent price.
During Coivd it was hard to get and expenses.
Now it's expenses...
I'm pretty well stock but if I see it at a fair price I buy more. The more ammo I have. The more I shoot.

I tend to keep 1,000 rounds per firearm except for shotgun, only 250 rounds per shotgun.
I also have the capability of reloading, so, double or triple my actual count.
Most is FMJ, 1/4 is hollow point/defensive.
When necessary, I don?t care if I shoot someone and the bullet goes all the way through, that?s 2 holes to bleed out of, not one.
Also, my FMJ will go through drywall, plywood and some brick and cinder block.

Those stocking up on ammo now, how much do you feel comfortable with for each caliber?
Many have been buying and stocking up in the last couple of days.
For instance 1000 rounds - 5 thousand -10,000 for each caliber?
I understand it depends on how much you shoot. I'm just curious of the "norm".

I'd prefer to have 10k of each caliber, but I'm not rich enough to afford that much for most of my calibers. It's easy to do with .22, but .44 mag would bankrupt me.

just 300 rounds per caliber would put you way ahead of people in time of need. it might even put you in the top 20% of all CA gun owner. No, 300 rounds are not a lot, but most gun owners out there have 1 or 2 guns and a box or 2 of ammo.

Many people of Calguns buy ammo by crates. The correct answer is somewhere in between..

I reload, but cost is what took me from 5 calibers to only reloading 2. .38/.357 I consider one caliber as it takes the same set of dies and projectiles.

At one time I had 6,000 of 5.56.

I try to keep enough components to reload what I have loaded one more time. But again cost is the major factor in that.

So In agree with many responses on this thread who say as much as you want and can afford.

When I asked this question as a greenhorn a few years back, half the replies were bacon or some variation of it. At the time I did not get it. I do now. (This was not long after the BB regs. had been adjusted based on postings on our forum.) I am glad to see that at least a few of you still have your guard up.
