Question for those stocking up on ammo.

This. The price and availability of 9mm, and to a lesser extent M193, is all but an economic indicator for me.With prices being so prohibitively expensive these days, I only buy 9mm right now and some .223/5.56 if I see a good deal on it. Everything else I'm just going to have to settle for what I have and start reloading if I want more of it.
So to answer your question, I buy unlimited 9mm, meaning there is no amount of 9mm I feel comfortable with. I usually buy 1000rds at a time. The only thing that restricts my buying is my budget. Whenever I think about buying anything firearm related, I think in terms of how many rounds of 9mm I can buy with that money.
And since 9mm is all I buy, it is what I shoot the most of. I usually shoot at least 200rds of 9mm every time I go to the range. That's only 5 range trips to go through 1000rds. If you think it terms of 10rd magazines/reloads, 200 rounds is only 20 magazines/reloads worth of shooting. That's not very much. Depending on how fast you shoot and reload magazines you can go through 200 rounds pretty fast.
If all of a sudden there was no ammo available ever again, I'd miss 9mm the most. 9mm is to me what .22lr is to everyone else.Comment

As much storage as I have before my wife starts complaining, which is about 2 years worth of shooting in my favorite two calibers, plus some in my third and fourth. This is why I only have a few calibers; I don't really need more than the ones I have.
Even though .38 and .357 in a revolver sound really awesome...Comment

I did a lot of class training in various weapon platforms so I stocked up at every PANIC OMG NO MO EVAR situation w/22, 44, 45, 308, 7.62, 12g in different permutations of each when I was younger and employed and outdoor tactical training every couple month or so (500-1000 rds per session) add personal range sessions.
My shooting has gone way down since 2019, maybe a couple K now per year.
I still have stuff from 2013, regular ball.
The stuff I bought during Benitez II was entirely odd ammo or real hard to find.

I think if your a shooter/hunter and a long time collector It kind of depends on how many calibers of exotics you have plus multiples of common caliber firearms you have . I couldn’t speak for myself but a friend is a long time firearms guy and his stash spread out amongst the state he has close to 2 -2.4 million .That might be exceptional or excessive depending on who’s looking in.Comment

9mm and .22. focus on the calibers you train with.Comment

Personally I buy whenever I see good deals. I have about 1000 for each caliber but about 3000 9mm sand 223 since I shoot that more often. It feels good buying out of state and getting it delivered to your door step just like the old days. Now we can get deals out of state instead of being forced to buy from our local gun storeComment

There are two types of ammo stocks...
SHTF Ammo: For me...1K Rifle Rounds, 1K Pistol Rounds 500 Shotgun
Target Ammo: At this point we've seen ammo shortages that have lasted 2+ years. So I would say, figure out what you shoot in 2+ years and double it.

Splithoof is on the right track! Not only x10k per family member but add another 10k per family member or friend/acquaintance that receives an unsolicited 'mail in ballot' .

I try to always have 1000 45 and 1000 9mm as a minimum. This should give me a reasonable amount for a year of training in case of a shortage, without the need to pay $30 for a 50 9mm rounds. They can be useful in case of apocalypse as well.

Tons of ammo. Never know when it could suddenly skyrocket in price or become unavailable. You need plenty of target ammo to stay familiar with your firearms and then your big stash for the SHTF. Because you will probably not have time to order and receive ammo once it becomes clear the SHTF is here or almost here. 1000 rounds of each caliber doesn't even cut it for the range ammo part of the equation.Comment
