    Gun transfer

What would be the best way to give my gun collection to my son before I pass on. I'm in California and do not want Gruesome to get a sniff.

If he is in ca you give them to him. He has to file with state. Why care about that. Are you that paranoid.

If you?re both in CA, there is the CalDoj CFARs web site that lets your register an intrafamiliar transfer with one low fee and unlimited guns listed for the transfer.

If he is out of state, you?d have to send them to an FFL where he is or you can travel to his location and use an FFL for a transfer.

If you are both CA residents, I don't think there is legal method for you to transfer the firearms to him without him notifying the CA DOJ of the transfer.

If your both in California and your not talking over 15-20 guns I would find a place and just do a private party transfer from you to him. This is not required but it will make the paperwork done and no issues after 10 days.

The other way sending the form in can take months for doj to acknowledge and get it into the system. Also there could be errors with paperwork or questions on one of the guns.

If you transfer ppt it is all done quickly and should any issues such as serial numbers etc come up the ffl can easily correct that. Also if your son wants to put any on a ccw etc they will quickly be in his name.

My experience doing this is that CFARS requires a FSC, or with a long gun a valid CA hunting license.

Also my experience is that lately CA DOJ has been a lot faster than they were a few years ago at turning around the approval letters. I waited on average about 5 months for approval letters in the past. The last couple CFARS applications I did on line took about 1 month. In fact they turned around my COE renewal within two weeks.

                  Thanks for the info.
I took the FSC test Sunday, without studying I only missed 1. Since the Brentwood Sportsmen's warehouse doesn't do ppt on Sunday, I created an account and filed on line.
my question is, will they email me when the process is complete, my son still has the 2 firearms.

I’ve only ever received a paper approval letter via snail mail. They only email when there is a problem.

If rifles were purchased before 2014 there would be no record of ownership would there? I'd think he'd be able to just hand them over

Yes, it works for son to father and father to son transfers in the state. FSC is required.

Assuming they are not AW registered or voluntary registered or self-made which required voluntary registration before 2019, there would not be a record of long guns acquired before 2014.

Got the email from the DOJ last Monday saying they accepted to application for the transfers and yesterday in the mail the transfers are complete and the 19X and G42 are now in my name.
so glad the process didn't take weeks or months.
Thanks for the help guys and sorry for hijacking this thread.
