Why exaggerate your SIZE?

You are right that it is likely purely psychological motivation to exaggerate.

I think some people feel the need to justify to themselves why they paid so much for a gun they can't shoot well. It's as much to appease their own guilt or whatever as it is to show their manly prowess to all us strangers on the internet.

I am guilty of taking a photo of my gun laying on a target showing a very tight group. What I don't divulge is that my gun is strategically laying on, and therefore covering, the fliers.

thats funny! my original posts a while back was in response to a different incident at the range with another buddy. we were dialing in a new remmy he had purchased for his kid. i forget the caliber but he shot what was basically a ragged hole 3 shot group at 50 yards. by the time the photo got to THR it was a 5 shot 100 yard group!

Group size that is. Posted something similar in another forum a while back and actually got some interesting answers. Anyway, the story goes like this. I went to the range with a fellow Calgunner and his wife last week to shoot his new LB custom 45. I wont name him because I'm not trying to call him out or anything. In any case I've been listening to him claim 2 inch groups at 25 yards ever since he got this thing. Now at 25 yards I’m happy to keep 3 rounds in the black on standard slow fire target so sub 2 inches is astounding to me. Longest hallway in my house is only 15 yards so I rarely practice at distances further than that when im at the range anyway.

Long story short, we get out to the range and he is nowhere near 2 inch groups (more like 2 feet). Half way through our session he laughs “I may have exaggerated a bit on the groups I pull with this thing”. The Mrs chuckled as well so I assume that’s not the only time he has exaggerated size (just kidding man). So I’m just wondering how much exaggeration is in all of the group size post I see? Also, why lie in the first place? Is it 100% ego or something else?

I belive it is human nature to want to be the head if the pride. People with low esteem need to let everyone around them that they bring some authority to the discussion. How many times have you seen a small man with a big dog or truck jacked up 4'in the air. I call this the little P#@^s syndrome.

That's why I shoot IPSC. Group size doesn't matter!

I always exaggerate in the other direction... that way when I get out to the range there's no standard to live up to everyone says "See, you're not a bad shot."

Lol that's what I do when taking people out. That way if I really suck then I can just say "See!" but if I shoot good then they say "You're such a liar!".

i'm a horrible shot. there, I said it! I usually dont set up paper targets anyways, just plink at the steel.

I shoot for groups. That's all I do. I can tell you from personal experience that a non-1.5" LB is capable of .75" center-to-center groups at 15 yards from a benchrest with handloads and some factory ammo.

yup if I'm meeting a calgunner at the range I tell them I suck at everything but safety.

It looks like every shot is within 3 inches from at least one other shot. I'd say you're good to go claiming a 3 inch group!
