I have the same delimma with my early ?70s wingmaster. Just too perfect to mess with. I did own a Maverick riot gun for a few years, but sold it to a coworker to fund something else. Zero issues with the Mav, but I?ve been shooting 870s since I was 15. They are just natural to me. Find an old one with some miles on it on GB.

Buy what you can find - and a hacksaw.

I must agree that early 870s are close to perfection. When our daughter was born in 1972 I convinced my wife that having a girl obligated me to own a shotgun. So off to Montgomery Wards I went.

I do prefer the Ithica 37 for its bottom ejection though.

Does anybody have any experience with the CZ 612? They're only $300 and they look pretty damn good as well! And includes a $50 rebate.

Any help is appreciated. I need a defensive shotgun with a 18.5 or 20 inch barrel.
Buds gun shop or Gun Broker will have plenty to pick from. I was up in Wild Bill's (Elk Grove). They have lots. Call ahead to confirm.

Did you check your local Big 5? They usually carry the 88

Big five was the first place I went. They are no longer selling guns, so they have a very limited inventory. The only thing in 18.5 they had was a Charles Daly.

I have a Maverick 88, a Mossberg 590 and I just sold a Remington Wingmaster 870. I also have a Remington 1100.Both Remington guns were built in the midst 80s

All of them function perfect. OP, I'd look closer at the 1100, especially if it's for home protection. Check GB and see if you can find an older one. I grew up shooting a Remington 11-48..that one never missed a best ...
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

1100's are great, but they are expensive as hell these days. New ones are over a thousand bucks, and decent used ones are twice as much as 88's. Pimpin's old hoes aren't bringing in the big bucks any more.

I bought the 8 shot "security" Maverick 88 from Big 5 back in 2018~ for $199.00 This was my first shotgun ever and couldn't be happier with my purchase. My only complaint was that I couldn't swap out the barrel for a longer one to shoot clay with, so I had to buy another shotgun for this purpose. I ended up buying a Franchi Affinity 3 to shoot clay with and I barely have used it.

I bought an 870 Express Tactical from SW. $445.00. I?m also buying a 870 Wingmaster with a 18.5 inch barrel and a 28 inch barrel from a friend for $225.00. It?s an older one made in the 70s but still nice.

Big 5 is getting out of the gun business, they told me yesterday. They advertise the Maverick, but they only have two in stock in the state now, and no more.

The big five near my house has no Mavericks at all.

I checked on the internet about Big 5 in Vallejo, and they have supposedly the Remington 870 ($519.99) but there is a caveat " in store purchase only ".
