Unsolicited "advice" from Oaktree RSO's

I was at Oaktree today with a couple inexperienced shooters and I brought an AR, AK, and a shotgun for them to shoot.

While we were shooting both RSO's came up to us telling us the AR was ejecting at 4 o' clock so it needed a heavier buffer since it was overgassed. They insisted 1 o'clock is undergassed, 3 o'clock is properly gassed, and 4 o'clock is overgassed.

I told them if it was overgassed, it would be ejecting at 1 o' clock like a typical Mini 14 or an AK. They did the we're-RSO's-and-we-know-what-we're-talking-about explanation of an undergassed/overgassed rifle. I didn't want the inexperienced shooters with me to get distracted so I told the RSO's ok. However, before we left about 30 minutes later, I pulled an ejection pattern chart on my phone and showed it to the RSO's.

I've noticed RSO's giving advice to shooters on the range before and now I wonder how many times they've told new/inexperienced shooters something incorrect.

I woulda said, “noted.” Then I woulda kept shooting and not cared where my cases eject to, just as long as the rifle ejects and shoots.

Bad advice is everywhere, same thing happens in gun shops.

I rarely ever go to ranges with range staff. I prefer to be my own RSO.

Should've told them the reason for shell deflectors on AR's is to keep lefties from getting shells in their faces when it ejects at the "normal" 4 o'clock pattern.

I'm an RSO at Sunnyvale Rod and Gun.

I don't see folks walking up and down bowling lanes or a driving range for golf spewing out wisdom. So I don't bother them at gun ranges so long as they follow all the safety protocols and range rules.

People will figure their own crap out eventually.

Don't ruin their extra curricular time.

wannabe "authority figures" (where everyone and their uncle is packing loaded guns no less) trying to be helpful but being mildly pesky doling out technical advice that is about legit issue but got finer points transposed or maybe you heard it wrong?

Never shot at a range with a RSO. Did shoot as a quest at a range that afterwords I swore I would never join. We were shooting on the pistol range with only one other shooter on site. He came over to tell me I could not shoot my carbine on the pistol range. I informed him it was loaded with 38 special and kept shooting.

Later during a cease fire I stepped off the concrete to pick up my brass and he scolded me again for doing that. I politely asked him when a better time to pick up my brass would be. He responded that I just need to leave them lay until the end of the day.

I decided to stop shooting and just watch my buddy at that point. When the nosy guy swept all of us with a loaded pistol I made a spectacle of the idiot by hitting deck and screaming gun as loud as I could. Dummy left not long after that.

At the range I belong to nobody has ever bothered me except when I was test firing a shotgun after I had repaired it. I was triple tapping a model 50 as fast as it would fire. Older than me guy came over to see what I had as it sounded like a full auto. Once he realized what it was and why I was banging it he went back to his lane.

I never give advice at the range unless asked. I shoot my way you do yours.
